Dean DeBlois, who previously directed the original animated trilogy and is set to direct the upcoming live-action films, will come back as both director and writer, as well as producer. During the presentation, DeBlois expressed his excitement about giving moviegoers a major summer release in two years (via Variety).
Gerard Butler, along with Nico Parker, shared the spotlight with Dean DeBlois during their on-stage appearance. In the movie, Butler assumes the character of Stoick the Mighty, while Parker takes on a role as a romantic interest for Stoick’s son, Hiccup. Mason Thames, reprising his part as Hiccup, is also back for this sequel.
This afternoon, I was privileged to be among the first to witness the full live-action remake at CinemaCon, and let me tell you, it was electrifying! The cast and I are incredibly grateful for your presence at our world premiere, making this a truly unforgettable moment for us all.
In the finale, an orchestra of 43 musicians led by Ricky Minor played music reminiscent of Scotland from the movie’s soundtrack, wrapping up the presentation. The animated movie How to Train Your Dragon 2, released in 2014, trailed Hiccup and Toothless as they discovered a plan to assemble a dragon force. The upcoming live-action sequel will continue this story, taking place five years after the occurrences of the initial film.
According to reports, the animated trilogy directed by DeBlois amassed a staggering $1.65 billion at worldwide box offices and was nominated for four Academy Awards. The live-action adaptations trace their roots back to DreamWorks Animation’s initial trilogy, with the first installment being the 2010 animated film.
