Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Release Date and New Specs

During a dedicated livestream from Nintendo, they unveiled the official launch date and detailed specifications for their eagerly awaited second-generation handheld gaming console, the Switch 2. Amongst numerous new features, the Switch 2 is scheduled to hit the market on June 5th at a price of $499.99 USD.

Compared to its predecessor, the latest model offers a more expansive 7.9-inch full HD screen (1080p) and retains the original’s slim design. Additionally, the updated Joy-Con controllers are larger and magnetically attach to the device, contrasting with the mechanical sliding of the previous version. Furthermore, Nintendo announced that when paired with compatible games, users can use the Joy-Con controllers as if they were a mouse on various surfaces.

Upgrading CPU and graphics processing units (GPUs) boosts speed, delivers sharper visuals, and speeds up load times for smoother gaming. The extended battery life gives you around 6.5 hours of continuous play, while the increased storage capacity offers a massive 8-fold improvement on the initial model with a generous 256 GB. Connect your new Nintendo Switch 2 to a TV using the Dock and enjoy gameplay in stunning 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second when playing compatible games and TVs that support these features.

Refreshing its device, Nintendo simultaneously introduces the GameChat online service, enabling players to converse across vast distances by simply pressing the new C button. This feature comes equipped with built-in microphones, accommodating up to 12 participants remotely and allowing up to 4 users to synchronize their screens simultaneously. Furthermore, when paired with a compatible USB-C camera, users can engage in video chats alongside their gameplay sessions.

In a change from its predecessor, the upcoming Switch 2 game cards will come in red instead of black, and it will support microSD Express cards rather than the traditional microSD cards. Additionally, Nintendo is set to debut a new game titled “Mario Kart World” alongside the device. Further details about this game will be shared during another Direct presentation on April 17.
