JR Makes Lisbon Debut with ‘Through My Window’

In the core of JR’s work lies a cry for societal change. Whether it’s crafting an optical illusion reminiscent of the Louvre or intervening as a muralist within California’s high-security Tehachapi prison, this French artist shines light on places of communal importance by featuring the faces of those who belong there. Scale becomes his preferred tool for impact.

Currently, JR is set to unveil his first appearance in Lisbon with the exhibition “Through My Window“, taking place at Underdogs Gallery, managed by Alexandre Farto, famously known as Vhils. The show, which continues until April 19th, presents a retrospective style display featuring 36 lithographs drawn from the artist’s personal collection, offering a glimpse into his past large-scale installations.

A person who calls himself a “photograffeur,” combining the roles of photographer and graffiti artist in French, has been posting large black-and-white portraits in diverse locations over the past few years, ranging from refugee camps to urban areas. This individual’s art transcends boundaries, physical and symbolic, and consistently poses a pressing question: does art have the power to transform the world?
