OPINION: Has South cinema really evolved in terms of presenting villains over the decades?

Over the years, cinema from the South has consistently offered an engaging experience. From its beginning, many movies from this region have showcased intimidating villains that leave a lasting impression on audiences with their powerful acting.

In contrast to the early days of cinema, where typical villains were commonly portrayed for heroes to confront, South Indian cinema has significantly reshaped the role of antagonists.

Today, villains in Southern films often steal the show for audiences, making it easy to find yourself sympathizing with the villain rather than the protagonist. With the boundaries between hero and villain becoming increasingly indistinct over time, let’s explore how these antagonists have transformed within South cinema.

South cinema villains in the initial years

Over time, the film industry based in South India has grown significantly, providing consistent entertainment for its audience. In contrast to the past, villain characters tended to be rather flat and lack depth in their portrayal.

In the exceptional film Jigarthanda DoubleX by Karthik Subbaraj, many actors cast for villainous roles tended to have darker complexions. During this period, it was common to see only one type of villain portrayed in movies.

Movies often portrayed villains as dreadful, unethical, and physically unsettling. The common perception of villains was further solidified by the poorly developed scripts that accompanied their characters.

Although we’ve seen a fresh wave of sinister characters take center stage, these performances have reshaped our understanding of how vital antagonists are to a story, much like the hero. However, there was often a distinct boundary between good and evil, portraying a black-and-white picture that restricted the complexities an antagonist could embody.

Contemporary villains in South cinema

Similarly to other movie industries globally, South cinema has progressed and refined itself over time with each new project. This advancement in creativity has allowed cinema to explore and blend the boundaries between protagonists and antagonists.

Over time, the depth of character development and storytelling in movies has significantly enhanced, making villains stand out more to audiences. In fact, during the 1990s and 2000s, it became common for even mainstream heroes to explore darker roles, relishing the acting challenge.

In the world of Tamil movies, Ajith Kumar’s memorable roles in films such as Vaali and Mankatha are hard to forget. Although he is a towering figure in the industry, he took on challenging negative parts that proved to be highly enjoyable.

Apart from these instances, movies in Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu cinemas have consistently offered intricate, sophisticated, and stylish narratives. Interestingly, just as these malevolent characters have evolved over time, so too has cinema itself. Modern villains are now portrayed with such intensity that viewers find themselves genuinely apprehensive of the chaos they might cause. Gone are the days when they were merely comical or exaggerated figures.
