Each week brings fresh AI news, with technology progressing at an impressive speed. The recent upgrade to OpenAI’s multimodal model, GPT-4o, has ignited a viral sensation online, enabling users to convert ordinary photos and videos into captivating animations reminiscent of Studio Ghibli‘s distinctive style. Initially seen as a fun expression of AI’s creative abilities, this development has rapidly escalated into a heated argument about copyright and artistic authenticity. As social media buzzes with admiration for these AI-generated visuals, artists and legal experts voice concerns over consent and intellectual property rights. Here’s a rundown of the latest advancement in AI technology.
Ghibli Wave on Social Media
the enchanting aesthetic reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s animation style. Social media platforms soon brimmed with Ghibli-inspired adaptations of photos, memes, and iconic scenes—including a creative take on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’s trailer.
As a passionate gamer and anime enthusiast, I’ve noticed some trending posts that have given popular memes like “the distracted boyfriend” or “the bro explaining” image a unique twist, or transformed political moments into enchanting Studio Ghibli-like scenes. It’s fascinating! However, it seems that the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, doesn’t find this AI-generated imagery quite as captivating. In a resurfaced 2016 interview, he referred to such digital artistry as an “insult to life itself,” expressing his reluctance to incorporate it into his creative process. His stance on authenticity and traditional artistry has once again sparked discussions about the value of hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animations. Yet, Studio Ghibli remains silent on this recent wave of AI-inspired content mirroring their iconic style.
Legal and Ethical Grey Zones
Remarkable as the outcomes produced by AI may be, they raise intricate legal and moral dilemmas. A number of lawsuits have been instigated against corporations such as OpenAI and Midjourney for supposedly incorporating copyrighted materials in their learning datasets. Artists like Sarah Andersen assert that their works have been utilized without consent, and contend that AI-generated content endangers their income. Although OpenAI has yet to verify whether Studio Ghibli’s films were employed during training, the similarity is striking—and causes concern among many. Until more definitive regulations are established, the boundary between inspiration and plagiarism remains perilously unclear.
I’d like to offer my perspective on the matter: The legal and creative debates surrounding AI aren’t entirely novel. For years, artists, particularly in the music industry, have been involved in lawsuits over work that seems too similar. There are numerous instances to back this up. As for the criticism of AI, that it lacks creativity because it merely reworks existing material, I find this argument unconvincing for two reasons. Initially, AI is capable of generating something entirely original using various styles. However, surprisingly, people seem less fascinated by this aspect. Instead, they prefer adaptations of familiar work, albeit with minor alterations. This preference is evident in the success of movies based on established intellectual properties over original works.
To counter the idea that AI lacks creativity because everything it generates is based on existing content, consider this: Haven’t you watched films by Quentin Tarantino or Edgar Wright? In my view, creativity lies in combining seemingly unrelated elements and making those connections clear. The more AI is exposed to human narratives and diverse material, the farther apart the elements it links will be. This results in connections that seem more intricate and less apparent – a quality we often associate with being creative.
