It’s reported that Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired the distribution rights for the eagerly anticipated remake of Red Sonja. They plan to manage American distribution, aiming for a cinema release towards the end of this year.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that the interpretation of this comic book series’ feature take is helmed by M. J. Bassett, a director renowned for his work on shows such as Iron Fist, Power, and Ash vs. Evil Dead. Interestingly, the original movie, which hit screens in 1985 amidst the peak of Conan the Barbarian movie fame, featured Arnold Schwarzenegger alongside newcomer Bridgitte Nielsen in the lead roles. Regrettably, this film fell short by almost every imaginable standard.
Enslaved. Shackled. Compelled to fight for self-preservation. Red Sonja is required to struggle against hordes in the bloody arenas of a tyrant’s realm, unite a band of castoffs to recover her liberty and vanquish Dragan and his merciless partner, Dark Annisia.
In this production, Tasha Huo is credited as the writer of the script, while Matilda Lutz takes on the leading character. Additionally, Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Martyn Ford, Michael Bisping, Philip Winchester, and Trevor Eve also appear in the film.
Supporters of Robert E. Howard’s original tales featuring ‘Conan’ and the ‘Red Sonya’ series have voiced apprehension regarding the upcoming ‘Red Sonja’ film, fearing that the movie could alter Red Sonja’s characterization, moving it away from the source material and potentially diluting its authenticity. It appears that the script for this film represents a significant departure from traditional representations of the character, with producers aiming to break away from the previous male-centric focus, also known as the “male-gaze,” and omitting certain crucial backstory elements. This, according to long-time fans, could potentially compromise the adaptation’s adherence to the original storyline.
There’s also concern that the film may attempt to win over contemporary viewers at the expense of long-time admirers by placing too much emphasis on current societal issues, potentially alienating fans who have followed the character Red Sonja for decades. The “she devil with a sword,” who remains popular in comics published by Dynamite Entertainment and has been traditionally portrayed as a sword and sorcery heroine, is a point of contention among fans. Essentially, there’s apprehension that the movie might not strike a balance between modernizing Red Sonja and preserving her unique qualities.
We’ll find out soon enough when the movie hits theaters later this year.
