Kanye West faces a copyright lawsuit from German singer Alice Merton, who alleges he utilized her song “Blindside” without authorization. Merton asserts that West incorporated an unauthorized sample of her track in his song “Gun to My Head.” Now, she’s pursuing compensation and legal recourse for the claimed infringement.
Why was Kanye West sued by Alice Merton?
Pop artist Alice Merton has taken legal action against Kanye West, alleging that he illegally utilized her track “Blindside” in his song “Gun to My Head.” The lawsuit, filed on March 25, claims that West included parts of “Blindside” into “Gun to My Head,” even though permission was not granted. Merton, together with two German firms, are demanding compensation for copyright violation and unjust competition. (Based on PEOPLE’s reporting)
In February 2024, Merton rejected West’s proposal to utilize “Blindside” as per the documents submitted. She cited her personal convictions as the basis for this decision, expressing discomfort about being linked to West due to his previous instances of antisemitic and racist statements. However, it was observed that West had already unveiled “Gun to My Head” during his Vultures album launch in December 2023. At this event, attendees noted the potential inclusion of “Blindside,” despite the absence of formal approval.
In addition to outlining the lawsuit, it also reveals the negative consequences Merton experienced following her refusal to grant clearance. It seems West’s supporters subjected her to online harassment and threats, attempting to persuade her to reconsider their request. Reports suggest that these events made Merton feel apprehensive about traveling back to the U.S. for her upcoming concert dates.
In August 2024, BMG on behalf of Merton requested Kanye West to halt the use of a particular sample. The letter was sent due to copyright concerns, as West apparently didn’t respond. Now, Merton along with other claimants are pursuing legal action, seeking an injunction, compensation, and a jury trial to tackle the claimed copyright infringement and its aftermath.
Merton, together with her lawyers, claim that West’s actions breached copyright regulations and ignored her rejections. At present, West has remained silent regarding the ongoing legal dispute.
