Previously, Apple made some minor updates to their premium AirPods Max headphones by introducing new color options and swapping the Lightning port for USB-C last year. However, these seemingly trivial adjustments served a more significant purpose. It wasn’t merely for cosmetic reasons or because of Apple’s compliance with the European Union’s “common charger” rule – it seems that Apple’s engineers have been secretly working on a software upgrade to introduce a highly anticipated feature for their over-ear AirPods model, which has been long overdue.
In the coming month, Apple plans to enhance the AirPods Max by incorporating “lossless audio and ultra-low latency sound”, offering users a chance to savor studio-quality, uncompressed audio. This upgrade will enable listeners to experience music as the artist intended in the recording studio. The new feature will allow AirPods Max to play 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, and Apple Music subscribers will have access to over 100 million songs in lossless audio to select from.
Instead of introducing groundbreaking or novel lossless audio technology, it can be argued that Apple’s audio products have lagged somewhat behind their competitors in recent times. However, Apple is recognized for taking its time to perfect its offerings and, as stated by CEO Tim Cook in a conversation with the Wall Street Journal, the company’s approach has always been about striving to be the best, not the first.
Apple distinguishes its lossless audio by emphasizing their usefulness for music production, a point made multiple times in their press release. More specifically, Apple is aiming at producers working with spatial audio, stating that the AirPods Max will become the only headphones allowing musicians to produce and mix songs using Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking. Apple has verified that Logic Pro will support this new feature, and also hinted that other music creation apps will be compatible as well.
Low-lag performance is another key advantage that makes these headphones suitable for gamers. According to Apple, this upgrade significantly reduces latency, providing a “zero response delay,” which is comparable to the instant feedback delivered by the built-in speakers on Mac, iPad, and iPhone devices.
As a gamer, I gotta mention that these fresh new features are only for the AirPods Max sporting USB-C. Unfortunately, if you’re rockin’ the original AirPods Max, you’re outta luck. The reason being, the lightning port on the initial model doesn’t deliver the same fast data transfer speeds as USB-C does. It’s a hardware issue that can’t be fixed with an update or software tweak.
Without confirming an exact date, Apple says the update will drop “next month”. Stay tuned.
