The Pitt: Who is the Mass Shooter at PillFest?

Many viewers are curious to find out the identity of the gunman at The Pitt’s music festival, who orchestrated the tragic incident resulting in multiple casualties during Episode 12. Dr. Robby (Noah Vyle) and the medical team must handle the crisis as they attend to numerous victims with gunshot wounds, left by the shooter. Earlier episodes have hinted at a specific individual being the potential culprit who was first introduced at the beginning of the season. However, with numerous patients and storylines within the hospital, it can be challenging to follow the plot twists. Here’s what we currently know about the possible suspect behind the mass shooting in The Pitt Season 1.

Who is the mass shooter in The Pitt?

Earlier episodes in The Pitt’s first season hint at a disturbed teenager named David Saunders as the potential gunman, but by Episode 12, the true identity of the shooter remains unofficially disclosed.

In the opening scene of this gripping series, I’m introduced as 18-year-old me, David (Jackson Kelly), and my 54-year-old mom, Theresa (Joanna Going). One day, I find Dr. Cassie McKay (Fiona Dourif) unconscious on the bathroom floor after a bout of severe vomiting. My mom later shares with Dr. McKay that her husband passed away due to COVID some years back. However, Dr. McKay senses something off about me – I appear detached and unconcerned about my mother’s health. She enlists the help of Dr. Robby to unravel the mystery surrounding us.

When David leaves the room, Theresa confides in Dr. Robby about her actions: She admitted to inducing sickness using ipecac, aiming to bring his son with her to the hospital, fearing he needed help due to potential issues. She also shared a discovery of concerning writings from David, such as lists of girls he intended to harm and a statement that they should all be eradicated. Despite believing David isn’t inherently evil, she acknowledged his troubled state and her reluctance to contact the police due to fear of an excessive response. To ensure safety, Theresa had previously removed all guns from their home; however, given David’s age and the location (Pennsylvania), there’s a possibility he could obtain a firearm.

In the given scenario, Dr. Robby discusses the situation with the hospital’s social worker, Kiara Alfaro, and they both speak to David about his father’s demise. However, David shows no interest in discussing the matter further and departs from the hospital. Despite the doctor’s attempts to follow up, David manages to escape the premises. In Episode 2, Theresa makes an effort to contact her son but receives no response. Although she believes that he wouldn’t be violent, she realizes that many parents may have had similar thoughts before their children were involved in actions deemed unimaginable.

In Episode 3, Kiara discloses that David failed to attend class, and Dr. Robby discusses attempting to get him readmitted to the hospital by fabricating a medical crisis involving Theresa (which didn’t occur). A few episodes later, the doctor arranges an appointment for Theresa with a behavioral specialist, hoping this would help her understand David better. In Episode 10, police are called to the hospital due to a tip from Dr. McKay about David listing female victims. This confrontation between her and Dr. Robby ensues, but for Theresa, it’s a choice she can accept.

In Episode 11, Theresa confides in Dr. Robby about a troubling Instagram post from David that reads, “All I desired was acceptance and affection, but instead, they ridiculed me and pushed me towards a life of solitude and suffering. It didn’t have to be this way.” Initially, the police found insufficient evidence in this statement for a Be On the Lookout (BOLO). Later, she plans to gather signatures from Kiara and Dr. Robby to petition for David’s involuntary commitment to a psychiatric facility.

However, by Episode 12, it may be a case of coming too late and insufficient, given that an active shooter incident is underway at PillFest. Sadly, Jake, who Dr. Robby refers to as his “stepson,” is also present at the festival. Despite Theresa’s conviction that David isn’t the shooter, we’ll have to wait and see how events unfold between him and Jake in Episode 13.
