Empuraan: Mohanlal reveals why Lucifer’s Telugu remake led by Chiranjeevi can’t get a sequel; ‘I don’t think Godfather team can…’

In 2019, Mohanlal’s movie “Lucifer” stands out for numerous reasons. This film sparked a groundbreaking transformation within the Malayalam film industry, an achievement that was once thought impossible. Furthermore, its unprecedented success prompted remakes in various other languages.

Out of all the adaptations, the one that stood out was the remake in Telugu, named Godfather, where megastar Chiranjeevi assumed the leading character. Although efforts were made to remain faithful to the source material, this film didn’t fare well at the cinema.

Before the premiere of Empuraan, Mohanlal has spoken about the Telugu adaptation of The Godfather and clarified that unlike Empuraan being a follow-up to Lucifer, there won’t be a sequel for The Godfather in this manner.

Mohanlal has discussed the Telugu movie based on The Godfather, stating that it doesn’t have a sequel like Empuraan does for Lucifer since its storyline doesn’t allow for a continuation similar to that.

As an ardent admirer, let me express my thoughts: “I’ve seen The Godfather, and while they tinkered with the tale a bit, it’s not uncommon for my works to be reimagined in different languages. Yet, I strongly believe that the creators of the remake missed some key characters from Lucifer when crafting their sequel, making it difficult for them to truly capture the essence of the original.

Reflecting on it now, The Godfather series noticeably did not include the character portrayed by Tovino Thomas in Lucifer, who similarly appears in L2: Empuraan. This omission resulted in the remake featuring Chiranjeevi, although it was a remake, lacking significant aspects that were integral to the original movie.

Skip ahead to the current moment – Lucifer has recently returned to cinemas, and a week later, its sequel L2: Empuraan will commence its theater debut.

Due to the quick release of both movies, viewers can now catch up on the original film before diving into the second one.

Once more, Prithviraj Sukumaran steps into the director’s chair for the highly anticipated sequel to the movie headlined by Mohanlal. This new installment is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on March 28th. The buzz among fans has reached unprecedented levels, as the film has already garnered a hugely positive reception even before it’s officially released.
