In her memoir “I Am Maria,” Maria Shriver shares that the end of her 25-year marriage to Arnold Schwarzenegger deeply shattered her, damaging her heart, her soul, and whatever remained of her. (Source: PEOPLE)
She wrote, ‘The foundation of my long-held denial about my marriage, parents, and job crumbled when I learned the truth in 2011.’ In this case, Arnold Schwarzenegger confessed to fathering a child with their housekeeper Mildred Baena during counseling. Following this revelation, Shriver filed for divorce in July 2011, and it was finalized in December 2021.
Shriver confesses that it was a grueling experience, causing her immense fear. She narrates being confined to a lonely, dimly lit hotel room where she wept profusely, whispering words of encouragement to herself: “Maria, this doesn’t have to be the end for you.” Shriver acknowledges her children – Katherine, Christina, Patrick, and Christopher – as sources of strength, expressing admiration for their display of grace, bravery, and fortitude during the tumultuous period. She emphasizes that the stability of their home and way of life was abruptly shattered in an instant.
In the book, Shriver discusses her childhood in a family that was both Irish and Catholic, as well as highly competitive. This environment did not encourage open discussions about feelings. She recalls, “The idea was deeply ingrained: I am not enough.” Later on, she discloses that a flood of suppressed sadness and pain, accumulated over many years, bursts forth like a tsunami when she confronts her past experiences for the first time.
At one point, Shriver visited a secluded convent and Mother Dolores said to her, “It seems like what you’re truly seeking, young lady, is the freedom to move past your marriage and embrace the identity of Maria.” Shriver started composing poetry from a profound inner source, unearthing aspects of herself that had lain hidden for years. She pens, “I’ve committed many errors. One of them was linking my self-worth to my accomplishments.
The Open Field will release I Am Maria on April 1, 2025.
