In the second season of “The Last of Us,” Kaitlyn Dever’s character, Abby, will deviate from her video game counterpart in multiple aspects, as confirmed by series creator Neil Druckmann. Previously, Druckmann mentioned that Dever’s portrayal of Abby wouldn’t feature the muscular physique present in the game version. More recently, he hinted that the series would explore Abby’s past connections with Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel Miller, and Bella Ramsey’s character, Ellie, before they were established in the game.
Neil Druckmann on how Abby has been changed for The Last of Us Season 2
Druckmann, one of the creators of The Last of Us games, hinted that the bond between Abby and Joel/Ellie in Season 2 of HBO’s adaptation will be established earlier than in the original game, The Last of Us Part II. He explained that viewers would quickly develop an emotional connection with Abby as they witness her survival struggles, such as running through snowy landscapes and battling infected creatures. In the game, the creative team could hold back certain elements to create a mystery that unfolds over time. However, in the show, this isn’t possible because the audience isn’t playing as Abby directly. (via Gold Derby)
Druckmann explained that if they had followed the game’s timeline in the series, viewers would have to wait a significantly long period to understand the backstory. He further stated that this information might get spoiled for them during different seasons, which was something they wanted to avoid. Consequently, it seemed suitable to advance that part and provide viewers with the necessary context immediately from the start.
Following Druckmann’s statement to Entertainment Weekly, it was revealed that Dever was chosen to play Abby due to her exceptional acting skills, with the creators prioritizing performance above all else.
As an avid fan, I can’t contain my excitement as I look back on how The Last of Us Season 1 meticulously brought the 2013 game to life. But here’s something even more intriguing: The upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us Part II won’t be confined to a single season. Instead, it’s set to unfold across multiple seasons!
In fact, during an interview with Deadline in February 2024, HBO executive Francesca Orsi hinted that the series might span an impressive four-season run! So, buckle up fellow fans, it looks like we’re in for a thrilling journey ahead!
The first series of “The Last of Us” debuted from January 15, 2023, to March 12, 2023. The second season of “The Last of Us” will start airing on HBO from April 13, 2025.
