Everything to know about Bill Chisholm, new owner of Boston Celtics
The iconic Boston Celtics basketball team has been purchased for a staggering $6.1 billion by a consortium headed by William “Bill” Chisholm, who is the co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group.
The sale price for this North American sports franchise has reached a record-breaking level, exceeding the $6.05 billion that was paid for the Washington Commanders. Chisholm, a dedicated Celtics fan from Georgetown, Massachusetts, is known to possess an extensive knowledge of the team, as described by the Boston Globe. (Yahoo Sports)
Chisholm obtained his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, where he also played soccer, and subsequently earned an MBA with honors from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Currently residing on Nantucket, Chisholm is considering purchasing property in Boston. In 2002, Chisholm co-founded Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm specializing in software, data, and analytics companies, with reported assets exceeding $10 billion as of March 2023, based in Boston.
In my gaming world, before establishing STG (Straight Talk Games), I teamed up with others to create the Valent Group. Prior to that, I had a stint at Bain & Company and held key positions at PaineWebber and various other financial institutions. Now, I’m a board member for Dodge Data, Cadmium, and CAI Software. As for my team in the real world, we’re about to become the 15th ownership group in Celtics history.
Chisholm serves as the head of this collective, yet he and other investors jointly own the entity. Rob Hale, who is CEO at Granite Telecommunications, has also entered the bidding process. Notably, Hale holds a smaller share in the Boston Celtics and boasts an estimated net worth of $5.8 billion, as per Forbes. However, it’s important to mention that the NBA’s Board of Governors must still give their approval before this sale can be finalized.
Once given the go-ahead, Chisholm is set to assume ownership. Grousbeck, however, will remain in his roles as CEO and governor until the 2027-28 season’s end. From then on, he will carry on with the team as a partner.
