USA Today is reporting about a documentary in development, which aims to highlight Stan Lee’s life through crowdfunding. This project also brings attention to the unfortunate mistreatment he experienced during his final years.
A recently unveiled documentary claims it will reveal the “really heart-wrenching” finale of the life of Marvel comics legend Stan Lee. However, before it can be released, the filmmakers require funding to make it available.
Movie makers aim to collect $300,000 through a Kickstarter campaign for completing their project titled “Stan Lee’s Last Act”.
Stan Lee, renowned as the architect of some of the most cherished superheroes in comic books and films, passed away in November 2018 at the age of 95. The upcoming documentary titled “The Final Chapter” is expected to explore the controversy that marked his later life by unveiling previously unreleased footage. This film will allegedly shed light on the hardships, deceit, and conflicts that Lee faced during this period, as reported in a press release from the makers of the film.
The movie claims it will unveil Lee’s most trusted associates, some of whom allegedly took advantage of Lee’s deteriorating health and advanced age, all the while capitalizing on his name and image for personal gain.
The Kickstarter project revolves around Jon Bolerjack, an accomplished comic book artist, director, and Lee’s assistant, who gained prominence within Lee’s close circle during filming, as stated on the Kickstarter page. Now, Bolerjack is eager to disclose his story.
According to the Kickstarter campaign, Jon managed to secure unique permissions and recorded everything he witnessed. What he discovered was a bustling marketplace where Stan’s signatures and memorabilia were being exchanged for vast sums of money. It appeared that rival dealers were backstabbing each other in an attempt to gain control over Stan’s wealth.”
“The Kickstarter campaign states that Jon was granted exclusive access and captured everything he observed. What he found was a booming marketplace where Stan’s autographs and memorabilia were being traded for large amounts of money, and it seemed as though rival dealers were scheming to take control of Stan’s fortune.
It’s deeply regrettable that those claiming to be close to him exploited and gained wealth from him, primarily due to his past fame as a cultural figure who developed beloved characters. Remarkably, many of these individuals failed to support his works even prior to his demise.
2018 saw a public unraveling of Lee’s life as a Los Angeles court granted elder abuse restraining order request made by J.C. Lee, Lee’s daughter, against Keya Morgan, her former manager. Abraham Riesman’s 2021 biography “The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee” delved into the final years of Lee’s life, shedding light on the legal battles and failed business endeavors that marked his later life.
Let’s pause for a moment. Aren’t you aware that Morgan was the collaborator with Riesman in writing a book that appeared to be a sensationalist attack on an icon? Some parts of it seemed designed to sully Lee’s reputation, despite the fact that he wasn’t perfect, and if this is being hidden, it’s shameful. I hope that the case against Morgan will come up in this documentary, should it ever be finished, but whether Riesman’s disrespectful attitude towards Lee will be addressed is still uncertain.
It’s fortunate that Lee’s daughter managed to resolve matters in the end, allowing him to spend his final months securely at his estate surrounded by people who knew and valued him, such as Roy Thomas. I can’t fathom what makes a man, once highly respected in the comics industry, a target for exploitation by dishonest individuals who sought to benefit financially from him during his later years. Clearly, this scandal offers a valuable lesson, one that I hope is being addressed thoughtfully by current comic book writers.
