Step Into Limbo at Pol Taburet’s Latest Exhibition ‘Oh If I Only Could Listen’

Pol Taburet’s most recent display, titled “If Only I Could Hear You Now“, demonstrates a captivating change in his artistic style, delving into the intricate relationship between aggression and tranquility, strain and indifference.

In his late twenties, Taburet has built a reputation with his distinctive blend of color, blended figures, and energetic arrangements that artfully combine airbrushing, acrylic, and oil methods. However, in this latest collection, he departs from the exuberance found in earlier works, instead opting for somber, subdued hues that hint at themes of limbo, sorrow, and untold stories. Drawing inspiration from Francisco Goya’s “Black Paintings” and his own personal grief following the loss of his grandmother, Taburet crafts artworks carrying an undercurrent of violence – though curiously absent of any direct act of violence.

Taburet acknowledges this peculiarity himself, pointing out, “Some of my new artwork may appear violent, yet upon closer inspection, no violence is actually occurring.” This inconsistency leaves the viewer with an unsettling tension that never quite escalates. He uses symbols commonly associated with violence, like needles, knives, and nails, but their purpose is more implied than actual. The figures in his paintings, typically without faces, frequently emerge from dim or unclear surroundings, adding to this persistent disquiet.

In this exhibit, you’ll find themes of rituals and ceremonies subtly woven in. For instance, in the piece titled “Those who may not sing,” there are mysterious figures huddled around a table, which evoke ideas of secrecy, judgement, and unseen powers at play. Elements like a pristine white cloth or an otherworldly radiance act as visual hints of emptiness, further emphasizing the overall theme of being stuck or suspended, much like in limbo.

Oh, If I Only Could Listen is on display at the Pabellón de los Hexágonos in Madrid until April 20.
