Major performance issues aside, over half of Monster Hunter Wilds’ sales are from Steam alone

Once upon a time, I could only find Monster Hunter games on the 3DS’s online store. However, those days are long gone, as the eShop no longer exists. Instead, Monster Hunter World on Steam is drawing in more than 400,000 players daily, as reported by Steam Charts and SteamDB.

To give you an idea of its popularity, Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive director, shared on social media that Monster Hunter Wilds – the top-selling game across all platforms it’s available on for February – generated over half its total sales through Steam. Interestingly, this launch performance was twice as much as what Monster Hunter Rise managed when it was exclusive to Nintendo Switch, according to the same report. Intriguingly, the report also labeled Monster Hunter Wilds as the best-selling game of 2025 so far.

The Monster Hunter series has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a specialized RPG catering to hardcore gamers into a worldwide sensation. Four years ago, Capcom pledged to intensify its efforts to enthrall PC gamers, and the anticipation among players was palpable. This commitment by Capcom wasn’t just appealing to Monster Hunter enthusiasts but also to many other gaming enthusiasts.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that in their 2024 report, Capcom proudly acknowledged their focus on PC gaming, stating that nearly half of their software sales come from this platform, indicating there’s still potential for growth. With their multi-platform approach and plans to reintroduce games like Monster Hunter Stories, I find myself questioning if the on-again, off-again console exclusivity of Monster Hunter might be a thing of the past. Beyond just increasing its reach, Monster Hunter has grown to become one of Capcom’s crown jewels, and a major player in the PC gaming world.

Despite the numerous issues like performance hiccups, bugs, and crashes that have given Monster Hunter Wilds a mixed rating on Steam, its exceptional quality might be one of the reasons for this. Lincoln Carpenter even described it as “an action game in a class without rivals.” As patches are released, drivers are updated, and hardware improves, the criticisms against Monster Hunter Wilds are unlikely to hamper its progress.
