Why Is Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman Not Playing? Injury Explained

It’s been announced that Freddie Freeman won’t be playing in the Dodgers’ first game of the season, which is against the Chicago Cubs at the Tokyo Dome, due to a recent injury he sustained. This news was shared on social media by the team itself.

Freddie Freeman out of Dodgers season opener due to injury

Freddie Freeman was excluded from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup just before the season opener against the Cubs.

The LA Dodgers made a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) regarding his exit, stating, “Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was scratched from today’s lineup with left rib discomfort.”

Kiké Hernández was announced as Freeman’s replacement at first base. Freeman previously dealt with an ankle injury that caused him discomfort during the 2024 World Series. However, he still bagged MVP honors. In November 2024, Freeman underwent surgery for his ankle and played in all four Cactus League games.

Fans stormed on X to wish the MLB star a recovery. A fan wrote, “Have a speedy recovery Freddy! We need you!” Another user commented, “Tough break for Freeman and the Dodgers! Hoping it’s nothing serious and he bounces back soon.”

Freddie posted pictures of his arrival in Japan ahead of the game on Instagram.

After announcing that their top player, Mookie Betts, would be unable to play in the upcoming two-game series against the Cubs due to an illness, the Dodgers confirmed this news on Monday, March 17. The manager of the team, Dave Roberts, revealed that Betts has lost around 15 pounds as a result of his sickness.

According to a report by USA Today, Roberts conveyed, “He’s not going to play in these two games. When you’re dehydrated, that’s what opens a person up to soft tissue injuries. We’re very mindful of that.”
