Paul Rudd, who is slated to appear in the upcoming Anaconda movie, explained its tone and genre during a recent interview. He also spoke about whether the movie would have an R rating. Notably, the original Anaconda, featuring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight, came out in 1997. Its box-office success led to a film series.
Paul Rudd says Anaconda is ‘totally unique’ and ‘not a remake’
During an interview with Collider, Rudd confirmed that the upcoming Anaconda movie is “totally unique” and “not a remake.” Further, the Ant-Man star revealed that, at the time of the interview, they were a week away from wrapping the production on the monster movie.
When asked about the rating and tone of the movie, Rudd responded, “Did you see The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent? So, it’s the same director, and the tone of that movie which was kind of a meta comedy, and it’s like that.”
The Death of a Unicorn actor continued, “It’s (the movie) about a bunch of people who were certainly inspired by and loved the movie Anaconda from the ’90s. But it’s not a remake. It’s a totally unique thing. It’s funny.”
Rudd stated that he wasn’t sure about the rating, but he did let us know that they were wrapping up filming within a week.
Tom Gormican is the filmmaker behind The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a 2022 action comedy that stars Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself and Pedro Pascal as billionaire Javi Gutiérrez. The story revolves around Cage, depicted as an actor whose best days are behind him, who forms a close bond with Gutiérrez, his big fan. However, Cage is soon approached by CIA operatives who claim that Gutiérrez might be involved in nefarious activities.
As indicated above, the upcoming Anaconda movie is the sixth entry in the series, preceded by the original feature, Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004), Anaconda 3: Offspring (2008), Anacondas: Trail of Blood (2009), and Lake Placid vs. Anaconda (2015). Besides Rudd, it stars Jack Black, Steve Zahn, and more. Anaconda debuts in U.S. theaters on December 25, 2025.
