Over two years since the cancellation of Westworld, its star Aaron Paul continues to harbor optimism that the series may make a comeback for a conclusive fifth season.
Originating from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, Westworld made its debut on HBO in October 2016 to considerable acclaim, garnering praise from both critics and viewers while also setting a record as the most-watched first season of any original series on HBO at that time. Adapted from Michael Crichton’s 1973 film, the show primarily unfolds in Westworld, a futuristic Wild West-themed amusement park teeming with sophisticated androids referred to as “hosts.” However, the last two seasons shifted the setting to the real world, unveiling that our lives are manipulated by a potent artificial intelligence.
What did Aaron Paul say about Westworld Season 5?
In an interview with ComicBook.com, actor Paul who plays Caleb Nichols on Westworld in Season 3, shared that co-creator Jonathan Nolan has given him a glimpse of how the series was intended to conclude. Although he’s keeping his fingers crossed, Paul mentioned he has a general idea about the ending but it’s not finalized yet. They are considering creating a full circle moment for the show, but he cautioned not to get too excited as they are still planning and figuring things out.
The termination of Westworld in November 2022 took many fans by surprise, as they had anticipated that creators Nolan and Joy would be given the chance to conclude the series according to their own plans, despite some later seasons receiving mixed criticism from critics and a drop in viewership.
Previously, Nolan mentioned that he aims to conclude the intricate narrative of Westworld by April 2024, saying, “Absolutely, without a doubt. We’re meticulous in our approach. It took me eight years and a change of director to bring Interstellar to life. We aspire to complete the tale we began.
He went on to say, “Regarding wrapping up the story, you know that the time we have is what we get, sometimes more than enough, sometimes not. I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished. It was an exceptional journey. I believe it would be incorrect to solely focus on regret [about its conclusion]. However, there remains a strong urge to complete it.
Westworld is currently available to stream on Tubi.
