Destiny 2 devs reveal major incoming nerfs for special weapons performing “too well”

The second act of Destiny 2: Episode Heresy is now underway, with Bungie providing details on the 8.2.5 patch in their latest update. This patch includes adjustments to enhance performance, rectify issues, and balance out certain aspects as they embark on the beginning of their second chapter. In their recent blog post, Bungie has disclosed that some special weapons in Destiny 2 are overperforming and will be subjected to upcoming nerfs. Additionally, other adjustments and fixes for future updates have also been announced.

Bungie announces incoming Destiny 2 nerfs

According to the recent update on the TWID blog by Bungie, they plan to reduce the power of The Closing Time perk in an upcoming software update.

According to Bungie, the perk “boosts some impressive stats when your magazine is nearly empty, and this enhancement is particularly noticeable on Special ammo weapons.” Furthermore, since players routinely start with low Special ammo, these stat boosts are usually active in the Crucible, causing a slight overperformance of various weapons in one-on-one combat situations.

According to Bungie, the reward for a Zealot, which they provided as an example, has a good reach because of this trait and the fact that it constantly operates.

Bungie hasn’t revealed the specific method for toning down the perk, but they’ve indicated that players won’t consistently start with a small amount of special ammunition anymore. They’ve also mentioned that they’re making adjustments to this perk, particularly focusing on Special weapons.

Beyond addressing the issue of The Closing Time perk, Bungie is also working on rectifying the “Snap Skating” ability for Warlocks. This is a movement technique that players have been using unintentionally, which provides them with significant advantages in managing map control and maneuvering during combat.

This change has been causing “uneven balancing problems” in the Player versus Player (PvP) environment, affecting both 3-versus-3 and 6-versus-6 matches. Bungie intends to rectify this issue in an upcoming update.

Next D2 update

Below is what Bungie has announced for the next Destiny 2 update, 8.2.5.1:

Hip-Fire Exotics

Discussions about Tommy’s Matchbox have been recurring often within our online group, and justifiably so! For quite some time, this tool has been somewhat underrated due to the robustness of its enhanced hip-fire performance as a base feature.

Due to the latest modifications in Radiant Dance Machines, there’s been an increase in Hunters wielding this Exotic weapon for amusing, hip-fire-only setups. Similar to our adjustments with Dead Man’s Tale and The Last Word, we plan to balance this aspect in update 8.2.5.1, and will provide further information in a future TWID (This Week At Bungie Devstream).

Instead, we’re going to restore the functionality of Dead Man’s Tale and The Last Word for use with Radiant Dance Machines. However, they will come equipped with fewer enhancements, specifically ones that don’t expand their reach but do boost their precision instead.

Radiant Dance Machines

Since the revamp, Radiant Dance Machines have become more popular in Crucible. However, the rise in usage isn’t just from one source. Instead, we notice approximately three times as many users choosing mouse and keyboard over controllers for their dance sessions.

Following the latest problem where Lodestar’s hip fire precision aim assist was found to be much higher for mouse and keyboard compared to controllers, we delved further into Radiant Dance Machine’s configuration and discovered that the same issue exists, though it’s less pronounced in severity.

8.2.5.1 adjustments include equalizing the precision angle threshold bonus from accuracy buffs, whether it’s from a controller or mouse/keyboard, while using Radiant Dance Machines. Additionally, we’ve rectified related issues in several areas, such as the Legacy Frame intrinsic on Redrix’s Estoc and BxR-55 Battler. This modification aims to make critical hits more challenging to achieve when hip firing with a mouse/keyboard in conjunction with these items, aligning their effectiveness closer to that of a controller.
