Superman’s Nathan Fillion Explains His Green Lantern Character

Actor Nathan Fillion has confirmed that he will portray Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman film. In a recent interview, The Rookie star expressed his enthusiasm for the character he is depicting within the DC Universe and labeled the Green Lantern Corps member as something of a “troublemaker.

Nathan Fillion says his Green Lantern in Superman is a ‘jerk’

In a conversation with TV Guide, Nathan Fillion described his Superman-like character, Guy Gardner, as a “rebellious” or “ruffian” type. He further emphasized that being “brave” and fearless, like Gardner, is more important than being “good” to be a member of the Green Lantern corps, which functions as an intergalactic law enforcement agency.

In a discussion, Fillion pointed out, “He’s quite unkind! However, it’s crucial to understand that being a Green Lantern doesn’t require goodness; bravery is what matters instead. So, Guy Gardner is fearless, yet not particularly admirable.” He further emphasized his enjoyment in portraying this character, stating, “He isn’t pleasant, but that makes it liberating for me as an actor. I simply ask myself, ‘What can I do to be the most self-centered and selfish in this situation?’ And that’s what I play out.

According to Fillion’s portrayal, the DC character, Gardner, stands out starkly compared to his role as John Nolan in The Rookie. While Nolan exhibits great bravery, he also shows a tender side that is marked by compassion and patience.

According to Fillion, Gardner seemed excessively self-assured and mistakenly thought he could challenge Superman. In essence, he suggested that if Gardner has a superpower, it’s his overconfidence, as he believes he could face off against Superman. However, he cannot do so, the Firefly actor stated.

Nathan Fillion has spent decades working extensively in both films and television. Apart from Christopher Nolan, he’s played key roles such as Mal Reynolds on Firefly (Fox) and its film sequel, Serenity, as well as Richard Castle on Castle (ABC). Frequently teaming up with James Gunn, DCU co-head and Superman’s director, Fillion has made guest appearances – lending his voice to characters like the Blue Alien Prisoner in Guardians of the Galaxy and Cory Pitzner / T.D.K. (The Detachable Kid) in The Suicide Squad, and will reprise his role as Master Karja in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Additionally, he’s voiced Hal Jordan / Green Lantern for various animated projects.

Superman debuts in U.S. theaters on July 11, 2025.
