The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty review: Famished

Title Translation: The Starving Lamb: A Visual Novel Journey During the Late Ming Dynasty (circa 1600s)

The novel’s setting is during a tumultuous period in China, where the country was grappling with numerous challenges such as natural calamities, epidemics, financial instability, and an ineffective government response. This combination resulted in widespread famine and unrest. The narrative delves into a grim and unforgiving portrayal of the effects these harsh circumstances can have on various sectors of society, with a keen emphasis on the complex dynamics between adults and children.

Not a hero

The main character, Liang, views himself as a cunning predator amidst innocents, more like a bandit than an upstanding citizen. He co-operates with his partner “Tongue” in various underhanded activities such as theft, violence, and taking on questionable tasks. In their latest assignment, they are tasked with escorting a group of young children to a distant city for sale, presumably as maids or servants. The group consists of two impoverished sisters, a kidnapped girl whose family failed to pay ransom, and a silent, orphaned girl, all under the age of ten. Despite Tongue’s efforts to persuade Liang that this job is justified, it clearly constitutes human trafficking, regardless of any excuses they might concoct.

If the idea of playing a human trafficker is unacceptable to you, I completely understand your hesitation. The game “Hungry Lamb” presents a gritty, uncompromising narrative, and it doesn’t shy away from exploring the darker aspects of humanity. Moreover, it isn’t just this one aspect that plunges you into darkness; you’ll also encounter other troubling situations throughout the game.

During the “Little Ice Age,” a period marked by reduced rainfall for several years, people faced immense hardships. Farming was severely impacted, leading to food scarcity for many families and even entire villages. In addition to struggling with dwindling resources, they were also burdened with heavy taxes and threatened by aggressive armies. Under such dire circumstances, cannibalism became a grim reality in some regions, posing as much of a threat as bandits.

Wolves, sheep, and lambs

In the tale of Hungry Lamb, the exploitation of children is not accidental; they are vulnerable and depend on adults, who may be as trustworthy as their ethical foundations and ability to endure pressure. Additionally, children serve as reflective elements in this narrative, playing a significant role. Keep in mind that delving into Hungry Lamb involves encountering challenging content that necessitates a warning about potential triggers. However, it presents such themes as a work of historically-based fiction.

The grim realities and heartbreaking pasts that Liang and his companions experience during their journeys significantly contribute to the somber tone of “Hungry Lamb.” However, unlike some works that might exploit such heavy themes for shock value or delve excessively into explicit details to make a point, this story maintains a delicate balance. It subtly hints at disturbing elements like violence and sexual content without dwelling on them, instead focusing on the characters’ feelings and viewpoints to preserve a sense of empathy amidst adversity. “Hungry Lamb” refrains from becoming sensationalistic or exploitative, and instead demonstrates that even in the harshest conditions, people can discover happiness.

One method is by using food as a medium. In this context, hunger serves as the central motif, and the pleasure of consuming something beyond basic rations or survival meals is when Hungry Lamb indulges excessively, much like a grand feast in Monster Hunter. The joy of eating well when merely surviving a hike is portrayed as a privilege in the narrative and visuals, but so is the raw emotion of disarray when hunger becomes dire. Food holds immense significance, especially when it’s scarce. Witnessing happiness in a simple meal can be powerfully moving, prompting introspection.

Menu stuff

Hungry Lamb enjoys finding enjoyment within visual novels, which offer various storylines and conclusions, including those with tragic endings that depict gruesome first-person death scenes. A convenient Flowchart function allows players to navigate different story branches quickly without having to replay the entire story each time. Additional features like logs, instant save options, auto play, and more are conveniently located in a minimalist menu. The touch screen is effectively utilized during handheld mode, enhancing the gaming experience. Although the subject matter can be heavy, dealing with themes of starvation and child distress, it’s still entertaining to explore these elements within the game.

The Starving Lamb: A Fascinating, Tough, and Engrossing Journey Through the Late Ming Dynasty

In this visual novel, we follow ordinary, imperfect, and fragile individuals, their lives shaped by circumstances beyond their control. Set against the historical backdrop of the Ming Dynasty, the narrative presents choices that seem plausible for that era, offering a glimpse into the past’s harsh realities.

The story is raw, yet it’s also vibrant, with moments of sorrow and violence contrasted by characters forming bonds over simple pleasures like shadow puppets or shared meals. The darkness inherent in this tale might deter some, but it never feels exploitative or sensational; instead, it serves as a mirror to reflect the hardships of human history.

The prose may occasionally be straightforward, and at times, it leans towards the dry. However, amidst a sea of anime-style fantasy and action, this grounded narrative offers a breath of fresh air.

I’m thrilled to share that as a fan, I’ll be diving into “The Hungry Lamb: Traveling in the Late Ming Dynasty” on March 13, 2025, not just on Nintendo Switch but also on PC! The publisher generously provided me with a Nintendo Switch code for this exciting journey.
