In recent times, there’s been an effort to modernize the classic British secret agent character, James Bond, created by Ian Fleming. This includes considering a shift in his gender or ethnicity. Throughout the years, this role has been portrayed by several actors, all of whom are from England, Ireland, and Scotland, such as Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
Speculation about a potential change has resurfaced following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM and the control of the character by producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. However, according to the Daily Mail, an internal memo from the studio suggests that the spy will not be changed in terms of gender or nationality. The reasons behind the former owners’ difficulties with the studio, leading to the buyout, are still unclear, but it is believed that Amazon aims to broaden the franchise through spinoff films and TV series. Contrary to rumors, altering the lead character does not seem to be a concern, as suggested by an inside source.
For a long time, there’s been a lot of misinformation circulating regarding Bond’s future. However, Amazon remains dedicated to preserving the essence of Bond, which includes maintaining his nationality as either British or from one of the Commonwealth countries – and it should also be noted that he is traditionally portrayed as male.
Is this a deliberate revelation meant to ease 007 fans’ concerns, or an unconfirmed speculation? Only time will tell.
