After the launch of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition in 2015, Microsoft decided against creating a complete graphic overhaul for Gears of War 2.
Frequently acclaimed as the top title within the collection, while Gears of War 3 is equally impressive, this remarkable third-person cooperative game was poised to receive a visual enhancement specifically for the Xbox One platform.
Gears of War 2: Ultimate Edition
According to tweets from Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Gears 4 environment artist Ayi Sanchez, it appears that both Splash Damage and The Coalition have been working on a complete remaster of Gears of War 2, which would be released as its own Ultimate Edition.
In a recent post, Sanchez unveiled pictures and videos showcasing their craftwork on the abandoned remake project. The images revealed a flesh-like substance, which presumably would’ve adorned the interior of the Riftworm, making the remake visually stunning.
10 years back, an environment artist shared with fans on Twitter that they had worked on a materials test for a potential remaster of Gears of War 2, but the project ultimately did not materialize.
Sadly, the event never transpired. It’s unclear how popular Gears is nowadays. However, I’d be thrilled if we could have a remastered version of it.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but wonder what it could have been like if Gears of War 2 Ultimate Edition had followed the footsteps of its predecessor and underwent a full remastering. We might have enjoyed a completely overhauled co-op campaign and a refreshed suite of multiplayer modes, adding a touch of modernity to our favorite battles. However, it remains uncertain whether the game would have included a standalone Horde Mode experience for us to conquer.
Given that the second game’s remaster was cancelled, it appears probable that Gears of War: Ultimate Edition didn’t sell as well as expected on Xbox. Yet, Microsoft proceeded to launch four more games in the series following this, including Gears 4, Gears 5, Gears Pop and Gears Tactics.
Currently, a fresh installment from the Gears of War series is being worked on – it’s titled “Gears of War: E-Day”. This upcoming title, which is an Xbox launch exclusive utilizing Unreal Engine 5, serves as a prequel set during Emergence Day. Players will once again assume the roles of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, taking them back before the storyline of the initial game.
