DOOM: The Dark Ages will have an open ending to make sure we can have more medieval adventures

The video game “DOOM: The Dark Ages” by Id Software is an engaging prequel, offering a fresh perspective on the original first-person shooter (FPS) classic. Since this game takes place prior to DOOM 2016, there’s been speculation that it might conclude with the famous Doom Slayer being sealed in the casket he emerges from in the reboot; however, this is not accurate.

It appears that the finale of DOOM: The Dark Ages allows Id Software the opportunity to explore and further develop the game’s medieval setting, should they choose to do so. In addition to DLC packs, there may even be future installments centered around this theme, given the possibility of a sequel.

DOOM: The Dark Ages won’t end in the casket

According to a discussion with PC Gamer, Dark Ages’ game director, Hugo Martin, has confirmed that the finale of the fresh DOOM game will not entail the Slayer being confined. Contrary to the 2016 reboot-sequel where the Slayer was imprisoned following his destructive rampage through Hell after losing his son, this won’t occur in the narrative of the upcoming game.

Martin put it this way: “What I’m saying is, reaching that point in the story would effectively conclude the middle ages chapter of the Doom saga, much like the Chronicles of the Slayer. In other words, if we were to carry the narrative to that extent, we wouldn’t be able to tell any more medieval tales. However, I’m not announcing any specific projects; I’m merely suggesting it might be wiser to keep the possibilities open.

It appears that Id’s growth strategy for The Dark Ages may mirror that of Eternal, offering fresh narrative elements for gamers to explore. Although the specifics of the storyline remain undisclosed, it’s clear that this expansion won’t conclude with the Slayer being imprisoned.

The game’s director added, “Our game does feature downloadable content and more, so I won’t be revealing spoilers, but I can assure you it doesn’t conclude with him being inside the coffin.” In reality, they destroyed a building over him, then placed him in the sarcophagus we discover at the start of 2016. And this game does not end on that note.

On May 13, 2025, the highly-anticipated release of DOOM: The Dark Ages takes place on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and personal computers. This action-packed title will also debut on Xbox Game Pass, allowing subscribers to play it instantly, and can be accessed through Cloud Gaming as well.
