In a recent chat, an important actor from the 2017 Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” Bokeem Woodbine, who played the villain Shocker, has given indications that his character might be back in future installments. Shocker was the secondary adversary after Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes / Vulture in the movie, but since then, he hasn’t been seen in the MCU.
We may not have seen the last of Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Shocker
In a recent conversation with The Direct, actor Tyler Mane hinted that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may not have seen the last of the character Shocker. When asked about the whereabouts of this character, Mane responded mysteriously, “That’s an intriguing query. I’m asking myself the same thing. Yet, I sense it might not be the final appearance of Shocker.
Though some enthusiasts of the character may have envisioned a different resolution, this storyline maintains a sense of optimism. In the movie “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, Herman Schultz, who becomes Shocker, is a companion to Toomes and works in salvage. Following an accidental death of the initial Shocker, Jackson Brice, Schultz acquires Brice’s upgraded version of Brock Rumlow’s gauntlet, later known as Crossbones. Eventually, Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, overcomes Schultz with the assistance of his buddy, Ned, portrayed by Jacob Batalon.
In the same interview, Woodbine revealed that there had been talks about Shocker donning his yellow costume from Marvel Comics in the movie, but this plan didn’t materialize. He further explained, “It wasn’t fitting or suitable for the initial film. However, it’s possible that we might come a bit closer to the original suit in future projects. The decision was made not to conceal his face because I had requested that specifically. They replied, ‘No, you express yourself through your face. So we want to be able to see you.’
Originating from the 60’s comics by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr, Herman Schultz, also known as Shocker, is a recurring character in the world of Spider-Man. A regular adversary for Spider-Man, Shockers’ screen adaptations can be seen in animated series like Ultimate Spider-Man (2012) and video games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018).
Significantly, Woodbine was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance as Mike Milligan in the second season of Fargo. Additionally, he has played characters such as Fathead Newman in Ray and Leon Cooley in Saving Grace.
