Movie Review: Mickey 17

In 2019, I found myself celebrating the triumph of “Parasite” as the Best Picture Oscar winner. This victory was particularly significant because it marked the first time a film made in South Korea had taken the top prize, with director Bong Joon Ho also claiming two major awards. Interestingly, two other films that arguably deserved the title were overlooked that year – “A Marriage Story” and “The Irishman”.

When a well-known filmmaker secures an Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director, they acquire the ability to secure financing for future films for quite some time. Regrettably, this power frequently leads to the creation of subpar films. A contemporary instance of this is Francis Ford Coppola’s film from last year, “Megalopolis,” where Coppola invested 124 million dollars of his own funds to create one of the most dismal movies ever produced.

The film “Mikey 17,” starring Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, is not as terrible as Megalopolis, but still manages to be on the list of contenders for one of the worst films ever produced. The premise, “In a futuristic world on another planet, an expendable worker on a colonization mission, dies multiple times and then is recreated using a 3D printing machine that can create clones of any human being,” seems intriguing at first glance. However, the reason for Mickey Barnes dying 17 times consecutively and his subsequent recycling through the cloning machine remains unexplained throughout the story. Furthermore, there is a character who appears frequently dressed as a giant rooster, without any explanation given in the narrative. The film follows Mickey Barnes as he endures one accidental death after another, only to find himself back in the cloning machine again. Unfortunately, the plot is nonsensical, disjointed, and largely incomprehensible. Within 30 minutes of watching this chaos, viewers are checking their watches, hoping for a speedy conclusion to the ordeal, which unfortunately lasts a grueling 2 hours and 17 minutes.
