Government Cheese Trailer: David Oyelowo Chases American Dream in Apple TV+ Comedy

Apple TV+ has unveiled the official trailer for their upcoming surrealist family comedy titled “Government Cheese,” starring Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo. This ten-episode series will premiere on Wednesday, April 16 with the first four episodes, and subsequent episodes will be released each Wednesday until May 28, 2025.

What happens in the Government Cheese trailer?

The video showcases Oyelowo as a devoted family man, eager to enhance his family’s life following his release from prison. Yet, his pursuit of the American dream takes him into unforeseen, dreamlike circumstances, adding layers of complexity to his plans. Beyond heading the cast, Oyelowo is also involved in executive production through his Yoruba Saxon production company.

Government Cheese is created and overseen by showrunners Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, who also take on the role of director for Hunter. The diverse cast features Jean-Michel Richaud, London Garcia, Djilali Rez-Kallah, Bokeem Woodbine, Jeremy Bobb, Louis Cancelmi, Julien Heron, Djilali Rez-Kallah, Louis Ferreira, Thomas Beaudoin, Kyle Mac, John Ortiz, and Adam Beach. Charles D. King, Jelani Johnson, and Ali Brown serve as executive producers for the series.

1969 in San Fernando Valley serves as the backdrop for this film, which follows the eccentric Chambers family as they strive towards grand and seemingly unattainable aspirations, unfettered by the constraints of reality. Upon his release from prison, Hampton Chambers (Oyelowo) anticipates a warm family reunion; however, things don’t go as planned. While he was away, Hampton’s wife Astoria (Missick) and sons Einstein (Ellison) and Harrison (Di’Allo Winston) have forged an unusual bond, creating an alternative family structure. Hampton’s return disrupts their harmonious existence.
