Following an unauthorized release of the live-action teaser for the Powerpuff Girls TV series on The CW, enthusiasts of the classic animated program have expressed their opinions about the abandoned project. The production of this show had been underway for three years before The CW made the decision to terminate it in May 2023.
The Powerpuff Girls series that didn’t make it to air was scripted and overseen by Heather Regnier (from iZombie) and Diablo Cody (known for Jennifer’s Body). The plot would have revolved around the main characters, the Powerpuff Girls, as disenchanted twenty-somethings who resent having spent their childhood fighting crime. As adults, they find it difficult to come together again when the world needs them most urgently. The cast included Chloe Bennett portraying Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, Yana Perrault playing Buttercup, Donald Faison in the role of Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany as Jojo, and Robin Lively as Sara Bellum.
How did the Powerpuff Girls fans react to the live-action trailer?
Online fans expressed a range of responses upon seeing the sneak peek of the Powerpuff Girls series remake, including some who criticized the choice to adapt the cherished animated series into live-action, as they felt it strayed too far from the original storyline’s essence.
The Powerpuff Girls deserved better than this, why would they mock them like this.

Congratulations, you’re no longer the worst Powerpuff Girls media

As a die-hard Powerpuff Girls fan, let me express my sentiments candidly: It’s hard to believe, but there’s nothing here that screams Powerpuff Girls to me! I can’t hide my relief that the show has been cancelled.
To put it bluntly, they messed with Mojo Jojo in a way that just doesn’t sit right with me.

For the very first time, I found myself speechless upon seeing the trailer for a cancelled TV series. It’s hard to believe that anyone could have thought the live-action version of The Powerpuff Girls would ever stand a chance of being successful, even just 1%.

This is truly terrible. I’m grateful that whatever created this ensured it no longer exists, and may it never return again. And to those who thought it was a good idea in the first place, let them find new employment.
And learning about the accusation of “whitewashing” in the cartoon was far more insulting than simply reading about it.

How could someone at The CW consider transforming an iconic cartoon villain such as Mojo Jojo into two white individuals and dividing the name in half? I can’t help but wonder, who came up with this peculiar idea, when I already knew that The Powerpuff script was subpar, but not THIS level of absurdity?!

Simultaneously, some spectators believed the show’s concept had promise if managed by a skilled creative crew. Furthermore, many viewers voiced their discontent upon the show’s termination, indicating that they would have tuned in due to its amusing nature.
I’m quite relieved they decided to cancel it. The idea of “mature Powerpuff Girls grappling with their superhero past” isn’t inherently terrible and could have been executed brilliantly, but my word, this execution is abysmal.
— MegaMitch (@TheMegaMitch) March 6, 2025
To put it simply, despite its questionable appearance, I firmly believe they should have gone ahead with the release. As a fan, I can’t help but feel for the artists who poured their hearts into this project. It’s a shame to see all that effort potentially wasted. And let’s be honest, we all would have been drawn in by the morbid curiosity it seems to inspire.

In a more straightforward and conversational manner, you might say: “The live-action version of the Powerpuff Girls on the CW is so incredibly terrible that it’s almost genius – it could easily be called the ‘Room’ of television shows.”
Here, I’ve kept the original sentiment but made the language more casual and easier to understand. The phrase “The Room” refers to a cult classic film known for its poor production quality and over-the-top acting, which has gained a devoted following due to its inadvertent entertainment value.

In a different scenario, we might’ve experienced a uniquely hilarious Powerpuff Girls anime spin-off! Oh, the injustice of it all – cancelling this idea was truly a crime you’ll have to answer for someday!

The best part about this trailer is genuinely appealing. If they had created a child-friendly series featuring the Powerpuff Girls battling crimes and other exciting exploits, it would have been incredibly cool. They had an excellent chance to do something remarkable, similar to shows like Sharkboy and Lava Girl or Spy Kids. Wow!
The most appealing aspect of this trailer is the one that stands out. The animated series that first appeared in 1998 was developed by Craig McCracken and primarily revolves around Professor Utonium. In an endeavor to create a perfect little girl, he instead brings to life the main characters Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, using ingredients like sugar, spice, everything nice, and a mysterious substance called Chemical X.
