Florence Pugh says that Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* is an “A24-feeling assassin movie.”
In U.S. cinemas starting May, “Thunderbolts” – a Marvel Cinematic Universe production helmed by Jake Schreier – is set to hit the screens. The movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast, with Florence Pugh portraying Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and Wyatt Russell stepping into the role of John Walker/U.S. Agent, among others.
What did Florence Pugh say about Thunderbolts*?
Speaking with Empire Magazine, I found myself marveling at how the Thunderbolts project morphed into a gritty, independent-style action flick that boasts the power of Marvel’s superheroes. It’s like watching an A24 production with superpowered characters!
Previously, Schreir held positions as both an executive producer and director during the first season of the Netflix series “Beef,” starring Steven Yeun and Alin Wong. This series was produced by A24.
Schreir noted that there’s a distinctive “Beef”-like quality to it, making it seem unique. He explained that while there’s a pervasive emotional depth in it, it doesn’t sacrifice humor for drama.
In 2012, Jack Schreir was the director for Robot & Frank, followed by Paper Towns in 2015. He has also overseen episodes on shows like Shameless, Lodge 49, Kidding, Dave, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, as well as various other productions.
Besides Belova, Stan, and Russell, the Thunderbolts team also features David Harbour portraying Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, and Lewis Pullman as Bob.
In the series Thunderbolts, Marvel Studios brings together an unusual ensemble of anti-heroes – Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes (also known as the Winter Soldier), Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker. According to the plot summary, these troubled characters are drawn into a deadly trap by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. As they grapple with their past demons, this motley crew is compelled to embark on a perilous mission that may either tear them apart or lead them towards redemption and unity as something greater, before it’s too late.
As a hardcore gamer and avid Marvel fan, I can’t contain my excitement! On May 2, 2025, right here in the USA, I’ll be witnessing the grand finale of Phase Five in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – none other than Marvel’s Thunderbolts! It’s going to be an explosive ride!
