Jake Schreier, the director of “Thunderbolts“, has just revealed an unexpected influence that shaped his vision for the upcoming Marvel Studios movie.
What did Toy Story 3 inspire in Thunderbolts*?
In a recent interview with Empire, Schreier discussed the movies that inspired the forthcoming film. He mentioned several movies such as Reservoir Dogs, Ronin, and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. These films feature ensemble casts of disparate individuals who are compelled to collaborate.
One intriguing film that caught Schreier’s attention was Pixar’s Toy Story 3 from 2010. The plot revolved around the toys in the movie, who found themselves facing irrelevance or being replaced, and how they dealt with this situation.
According to Schreier, the Pixar threequel isn’t primarily centered around a specific genre; instead, it emphasizes the relationships between the characters who function like a team that has been brought together. The furnace sequence is particularly effective because viewers have grown so attached to these characters. Essentially, he’s asking if they can escape from the trash can as a group.
Thunderbolts* will be released in United States theaters on May 2, 2025.
In this movie, you’ll find Florence Pugh playing Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan portraying Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell in the role of John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, Lewis Pullman as Bob, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus taking on the character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
In the movie, Geraldine Viswanathan is set to play a character called Mel, while Wendell Edward Pierce has been cast for an unspecified role. Furthermore, it’s anticipated that Laurence Fishburne and Rachel Weisz will reprise their roles as Bill Foster and Melina Vostokoff, from Ant-Man and the Wasp and Black Widow respectively.
The screenplay for Thunderbolts is penned by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo. Previously, Schreier worked on films like Robot & Frank (2012) and Paper Towns (2015). Additionally, he directed several episodes from Season 1 of Netflix’s Beef.
