Starting from its gripping introduction in 2013 up to the debated yet skillfully designed The Last of Us Part II in 2020, this series has consistently evolved, making a lasting impact not only on the gaming world but also on entertainment as a whole. The Last of Us franchise has ventured into television and garnered significant praise for its HBO adaptation, which ranks among the most successful video game adaptations ever made. With another season planned, it’s clear that this series is thriving like never before.
A Cryptic Statement That Shook Fans
Recently, while chatting with Variety, the amazingly talented Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog dropped a hint that’s got us fans buzzing – could our beloved franchise still have some uncharted territories ahead?
“Don’t bet on there being more Last of Us.”
The comment may have various interpretations. Could it imply that The Last of Us Part III might not ever materialize, or is it hinting that any potential third installment could mark the conclusion of the storyline?
It’s astonishing and tinged with sweet sorrow to consider that a beloved franchise, adored by countless people, might be nearing its conclusion.
A Decade of The Last of Us
Back in 2013, when The Last of Us debuted, I was among the many who instantly recognized its brilliance. The heart-wrenching narrative of Joel and Ellie navigating through a post-apocalyptic landscape left me spellbound, raising the bar for emotional storytelling within video games to unprecedented heights. It wasn’t merely a game—it was an immersive journey that I couldn’t get enough of.
Ever since, the title has been refined and reintroduced on numerous occasions, captivating new crowds on various digital platforms and console eras. The series underwent significant transformation in 2020 with the debut of The Last of Us Part II, a game that pushed boundaries by presenting gamers with intricate ethical quandaries. Although it sparked debate among certain fan bases, it was generally praised as a pinnacle of storytelling in video games, securing Game of the Year accolades and shattering industry records.
Around a year ago, on April 19, 2024, The Last of Us Part II received its remastered edition. This updated version included improved graphics, additional gameplay modes, and insights from the game’s developers. For many fans, it was a delightful revisit to a cherished game, but for others, a question arose: Why enhance a game if the series isn’t being further developed?
The HBO Series: A New Audience, A New Legacy
Regardless of what lies ahead for the games, there’s no denying that the HBO adaptation has firmly established The Last of Us as a pop culture sensation.
The inaugural season of the series, featuring Pedro Pascal portraying Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, was an overwhelming triumph, garnering praise from critics and taking home eight Emmy Awards. It skillfully depicted the game’s emotional layers while adding depth to the narrative in significant ways, demonstrating that adaptations from video games can be equally impactful as their original content.
Enthusiasts are eagerly counting down to the spring 2025 release of the second series installment, marking almost two and a half years since its predecessor first aired. The fresh episodes will start adapting The Last of Us Part II, with a third season planned subsequently to wrap up the entire game’s narrative.
Given the series attracting millions of fresh viewers, it might be assumed that Naughty Dog is keen to carry on with the franchise. However, Druckmann’s recent statements seem to indicate a different stance.
A Future in Question
For years, whispers about The Last of Us Part III have spread, driven by leaks, job postings, and cryptic comments from Naughty Dog that sparked speculation. However, to this day, the game has never been officially acknowledged. Neil Druckmann’s latest statements suggest that if a third game is indeed in development, it could mark the end of the series. Or, surprisingly, there might not be one at all.
It became clearer than ever that the future of the franchise was uncertain in December 2023, as Naughty Dog officially announced the cancellation of their planned multiplayer game based on The Last of Us. This long-developed project aimed to bring a multiplayer aspect to the series within its post-apocalyptic universe. However, due to a change in focus towards single-player games, the studio decided not to proceed with it.
Unexpectedly, during The Game Awards 2024, Naughty Dog unveiled Intergalactic, a brand-new intellectual property instead of providing further hints about The Last of Us. This unexpected move left fans in awe, as the studio seemed to be veering towards an entirely different project.
A little over a year back, I recall Druckmann mentioning in the TLOU 2 documentary that he believed he had figured out the story for TLOU 3. Now, it seems like he’s throwing cold water on that idea, jokingly suggesting we might just never create another Last of Us game. LOL!

Should The Last of Us End?
This raises the crucial point: Should the story of The Last of Us be continued, or is it more fitting for the series to come to a conclusion?
In one perspective, The Last of Us Part II offered a compelling, yet contentious, ending to Ellie’s saga. Some fans argue that extending the story might lessen its impact. If Naughty Dog lacks a definitive plan for a third game, it might be wiser to preserve the current conclusion.
Meanwhile, there remain tales yet untold: Ellie’s destiny remains unclear, Abby’s story could be expanded upon, and a prequel set within the Last of Us universe featuring new characters is also a potential option.
Regardless if The Last of Us Part III materializes or not, there’s no denying that this series has indelibly etched its influence upon the annals of video game history.
What’s your take on it? Do you believe that The Last of Us series should conclude with Part II, or are there more tales yet to unfold?
