In the world of YouTube and copyright disagreements, there’s often no lack of debate. The latest flare-up involves speedrunning YouTuber Karl Jobst and podcast host Joe Rogan. The bone of contention? A 30-second excerpt from Rogan’s podcast showcasing Elon Musk bragging about his Quake prowess. Jobst incorporated this clip in his video scrutinizing Elon Musk’s gaming abilities, a practice not uncommon for billionaires to be subjected to.
Jobst argues that the strike wasn’t a spontaneous action by an automated system, but one made deliberately, which has triggered criticism from fellow artists. Here’s all you need to understand about the recent copyright controversy.
Karl Jobst Fights Back
Contrary to rumors suggesting an automated process, Karl Jobst explicitly dismissed the idea that the copyright strike was automated. When a user proposed the possibility of the claim being flagged by YouTube’s system, Jobst responded bluntly, “This one wasn’t.
Yet, he didn’t offer specific reasons for his belief that it was a manually initiated claim. This lack of clarity has sparked more discussions about the true intentions behind the removal.
The entire video featuring Elon Musk was flagged for copyright infringement by @joerogan, as I had included a brief 30-second excerpt where he discussed Quake. Seems quite petty, doesn’t it?

Well, it’s awesome news that the video has been reinstated! You know, I’m talking about the one with Elon Musk and Joe Rogan. The 41-minute clip, though, is chopped up into brief segments, making their conversation hard to follow at times. However, there’s this one clear moment where Rogan asks Musk about his global rank, and Musk just shrugs it off, saying “Yeah, yeah.” Seems like such a small detail, but it was enough for the video to get flagged.
I invite everyone to check out the linked video, which includes a time marker for that specific conversation. Pay close attention to how Elon Musk says ‘yes’, while slightly tilting his head. In my opinion, if that’s not an example of a casual ‘who cares’ moment, I’m not sure what would be.
YouTubers Slam Copyright Abuse
In a notable turn of events, this drama garnered interest from prominent creators, including The Act Man, who boasts over 2 million subscribers. He expressed his thoughts on the matter via a tweet: “I’ve observed that the current generation seems to misuse the Copyright system excessively.” Although Musk was not directly mentioned, many interpreted it as a pointed remark. Known for his stance against censorship and his pro-free speech views, Musk has taken actions counter to the ‘woke’ ideology – purchasing Twitter and establishing a game studio, criticizing contemporary games for being too aligned with this perspective.
This inconsistency has only fanned the flames further. Critics contend that Musk’s championing of free speech seems at odds with his role in a copyright disagreement that appears overly forceful. Whether intentional or not, this situation has ignited a broader discussion about fair use and the power struggles between influential media personalities and content providers.
As a gamer myself, I’d say intentionally flagging Musk for game progress seems off-base given his statements. He didn’t claim to have earned that advancement himself; instead, he may have paid someone else to do it. If there’s no need for an apology, then why penalize the video? Now, Rogan is a big name on social media, so maybe the algorithm is being extra careful, but who knows for sure? After all, I’m just guessing here too.
Do you think the strike was intentional? If it was, was it appropriate? Tell us in the comments!
