In the game Split Fiction, there are numerous hidden references to well-known games in the entertainment industry. Here’s a rundown of some of the Easter eggs we found while playing.
Four years after the critically acclaimed game It Takes Two, Hazelight Studios has released another exceptional cooperative journey titled Split Fiction. Unlike any other chapters, each one presents a unique experience as you navigate through a wide array of combat scenarios, brain-teasing puzzles, and numerous other elements we won’t reveal to preserve the surprise.
As you progress, it’s not uncommon to discover expansive sections featuring multiple paths. Deviating from the primary route frequently leads to encounters with Side Quests, places to rest on benches, and even unexpected treasures hidden as Easter eggs.
In some cases, references are quite obvious and easily recognizable by gamers, whereas others might require a bit of careful observation. Here’s a compilation of the Easter eggs we found while playing Split Fiction.
It Takes Two
In the world of Split Fiction, one of the early Easter eggs is subtly linking back to Hazelight’s previous creation, It Takes Two. Eagle-eyed fans of this game will spot a specific plush toy in the opening sci-fi chapter that pays homage to their favorite title.

In the midst of all the motorbike pursuits and intense platforming, deviating from the usual route may take you to a specific store that’s shut for the evening. This store houses none other than the adorable plushies May and Cody… found in It Takes Two. Just like their interaction, you can even unintentionally damage this entirely harmless elephant to earn an effortless Trophy or Achievement.

A Way Out
Naturally, as one Hazeflight game was already mentioned, it was just a question of time until the rest were referenced in a playful manner too. A Game called “A Way Out” had to be included, and though it might be overlooked, crawling beneath certain obstacles to catch glimpses of Vincent and Leo in the flesh is definitely worth the search for this specific Easter egg.
Assassin’s Creed
At an early point in the game, there’s a charming nod to Ubisoft’s widely acclaimed Assassin’s Creed series. Perched high above, you notice a stack of hay below which seems strikingly similar to the ones scattered across the Assassin’s Creed games.
Similar to how characters like Ezio and Altair could perform a daring leap into the abyss, only to land safely in a pile of hay, Zoe and Mio have this skill too. It’s a charming tribute to one of gaming’s most cherished franchises.
Dark Souls
One of the more evident nods is a humorous tribute to the Dark Souls series. Although one might contend that it’s a broad reference to games developed by FromSoftware overall, the sword placed in the flame leaves no room for doubt, as it undeniably references the famous safe haven found in Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3.
In a mystical town square filled with various creatures and lots of feline friends, one specific route takes you to a stage where only the platforms glow when you approach closely while carrying the appropriate light.
Instead of veering left, I opted for a right turn, revealing an unseen passage that descended into a secret chamber. The instant my character entered this hidden sanctum, the game seized control, and the words ‘Bonfire Lit’ illuminated the screen.

Zoe and Mio could spend a while relaxing near the fire, joined by luminescent snails. Not sure about the meaning?
Prince of Persia
The first Side Story you encounter seems like it was designed with a playful touch. It takes you to a world where you need to navigate the ‘Sands of Time’. To us, this strongly resembles the Prince of Persia series.
As I dart through this captivating level, I find myself leaping off walls left and right, an exhilarating experience that’s reminiscent of a certain character known for his wall-jumping prowess. And let me tell you, Mio’s extraordinary attire with its striking red sash, seems to share a visual resemblance with another iconic figure – the Prince himself.
Absolutely, it’s plausible that Hazelight Studio values the Prince of Persia series as much as we do, though it could simply be a coincidence that we see similarities between our works and theirs.
At the moment, those are all the charming Easter eggs we’ve found during our time in Split Fiction. Given that there will likely be many more appearing soon, we’ll make sure to update this space when gamers discover additional intriguing references.
