Unni Mukundan’s Marco producer responds to backlash over violence in cinema, promises to no longer make such films

In 2024, the Malayalam film Marco, featuring Unni Mukundan as the main character, debuted on the big screen and achieved significant box office success. Nevertheless, due to criticisms concerning the movie’s depiction of violence, the producer has responded to these concerns and explained his future views on creating such films.

In conversation with Asianet News, the producer clarified that he will cease creating violent movies similar to Marco. He stressed that the movie never aimed to encourage violence in any way.

The producer explained at length that their goal was to craft an immersive movie experience. Yet, they justified the graphic violence depicted in the film by arguing that it was essential to the story’s conclusion.

He went on to say that specific features were added to match the storyline of the film, and he emphasized that the slogan, “The Ultra-Violent Movie,” was employed primarily as a promotional tactic for clarity, not to create hype or sensationalism.

Furthermore, the news highlighted Marco following the CBFC’s decision to prohibit the movie from airing on TV due to excessive violence. Consequently, they have temporarily stopped granting the satellite rights for the film.

Furthermore, the Regional Officer at the CBFC (Censor Board of Film Certification) has requested the chairperson for action, suggesting that the central government should step in and prohibit Marco’s content from being broadcasted on Over-The-Top (OTT) media platforms.

The film “Marco,” headlined by Unni Mukundan, is a sequel loosely based on the 2019 movie “Mikhael” with Nivin Pauly in the central role. Guided by director Haneef Adeni, this contemporary noir action thriller revolves around Marco, a prominent figure in a gold trading family, whose life spirals into darkness upon the murder of his kin. Driven to find justice, Marco and his sibling embark on an unyielding pursuit to identify the killers, paving the way for a suspenseful storyline.

Marco has been reported as being the highest-earning A-rated Malayalam movie ever made. The film features a talented group of actors such as Siddique, Jagadeesh, Abhimanyu Shammi Thilakan, and Kabir Duhan Singh. At present, you can watch it on SonyLIV streaming platform.
