George Lowe passes away at 67, claims report
George Lowe, the veteran voice actor best known for voicing Space Ghost, has died at the age of 67.
It was confirmed by his representative to Rolling Stone that he had passed away, with the specific cause of death not yet revealed. As per a Facebook post made by his friend “Marvelous Marvin” Boone, he had been battling a prolonged illness before his demise. Boone eulogized him as an incredibly gifted artist and voice actor, and humorously referred to him as the “funniest man on Earth.
Lowe kick-started his professional journey in radio while still young, landing his first gig at WWJB in Florida. Later in the late 80s and early 90s, he shifted to voice-over roles, working with Cartoon Network and other networks. In 1994, Cartoon Network hired Lowe for Space Ghost, a role that reimagined the 60s Hanna-Barbera character as a satirical late-night talk show host. This series debuted on Cartoon Network and significantly shaped Adult Swim’s programming.
The program combined animation with real-life interviews of celebrities, frequently modified for laughs. Initially, Lowe imitated the original Space Ghost actor Gary Owens, but eventually made the character uniquely his own through improvisation. In 2020, he reminisced, “We did things that would now get us banned, blacklisted, and deported to Sri Lanka.” (as reported by Under The Radar)
Besides playing Space Ghost in the original series, Lowe additionally voiced this character in spin-offs like Cartoon Planet and The Brak Show. Moreover, he has provided voices for characters across various shows such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Robot Chicken, Squidbillies, and American Dad!. His last portrayal of Space Ghost was seen in a 2024 episode of Jellystone!.
