Why did Jermaine Jackson leave Jackson 5?

The Jackson 5 is among the most influential bands ever, having sold more than 150 million albums globally and continuing to be cherished for their hits even after six decades. Notably, Michael Jackson emerged as a renowned solo artist from this group, but he wasn’t the first member to depart.

The honor goes to Jermaine Jackson, their brother, who served as the bassist for the Jackson 5 since they formed in 1964 until 1975. He was an integral part of all the band’s iconic hits from that period. However, times were shifting; the Jackson 5 concluded their contract with Motown in 1975, due to declining album sales.

Instead of leaving the record label like his brothers, Jermaine Jackson chose to remain. This was because he was married to Hazel Gordy, the daughter of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, and he felt a sense of loyalty towards the label, given their significant role in launching the career of the Jackson 5.

Later on, Jackson confided in the New Yorker that he wrestled intensely with his choice to act independently. “The feeling of isolation and detachment was intense,” he acknowledged. “It wasn’t just a matter of losing an arm; it felt like I had lost all my limbs. I had Hazel, naturally, but the camaraderie was deeply ingrained in my identity and experiences. When it was taken away, I felt a tearing sensation.

Back when I split from the Jackson 5 in ’72, I already had some solo albums under my belt. But, you know, leaving the group meant this would be where I pour out all my musical creativity. The early years saw me scoring some modest hits with each of my post-Jackson 5 albums, but it was Let’s Get Serious, released in ’80, that catapulted me to stardom as a solo artist.

Jermaine has reunited with the band many times

The main song was a Billboard Top 10 hit and number one on the Hot Black Singles chart. This demonstrated that the artist had the ability to make a strong impact in music, despite his brother Michael making a massive impact on what is often considered mainstream music. In 1982, Jermaine Jackson rejoined Jackson 5 for the Motown 25 TV special. The reunion was successful, leading them to record an album titled “Victory” in 1984.

As a die-hard fan, I must admit it’s a blessing that they released such an incredible album, as it turned out to be their most successful in their entire discography. Jermaine Jackson decided to stick with the band for another album titled “2300 Jackson Street“, which was released in 1989. He also participated in their much-anticipated reunion tour in 2001.

Keeping track of all the Jackson reunions and their different lineups gets challenging in the 2010s, but Jermaine is officially recognized as a member from the years 2012 to 2020.

Currently, only Jackie and Marlon Jackson remain actively involved with the Jackson 5. Jermaine, who was once the second most prominent star to emerge from the group after the release of his 2012 solo album “I Wish You L.O.V.E.”, has since taken a step back. Interestingly, his son, Jaafar, is poised to portray Michael Jackson in an upcoming biopic. To add to this, Jermaine himself has been part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1997.
