Jon M. Chu Explains Why Crazy Rich Asians Follow-up Had To Be a TV Show

Jon M. Chu is planning to adapt the beloved Crazy Rich Asians book series for television, continuing the story on screen.

As a devoted admirer of the cinematic magic woven by Jon M. Chu, I eagerly follow updates on his creative endeavors, and recent news about his upcoming TV adaptation of “Crazy Rich Asians” has me brimming with excitement! In an exclusive interview, Chu shared insights into why this enchanting tale demands a new life on the small screen.

I found myself craving more space, that’s just how things were,” I shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “The expansive setting gave us a chance to fully explore each character.

Chu stated that the upcoming TV series doesn’t stand instead of plans for another film; unfortunately, he couldn’t disclose any specifics at this time.

Instead of saying it could be a sequel, it seemed like every character required more development, and a movie alone wasn’t sufficient for us. Chu mentioned that we have the chance to bring Adele back into the story, which is why we’re starting this project now. It should be an enjoyable experience.

Who is involved with Jon M. Chu in the Crazy Rich Asians TV show?

Just last week, Max unveiled his intentions for creating a television series inspired by Crazy Rich Asians. The screenwriter of the 2018 film, Adele Lim, has been appointed as the showrunner and executive producer. Additionally, Chu is expected to serve as an executive producer on the upcoming TV series.

The series draws inspiration from Kevin Kwan’s novels, “Crazy Rich Asians” published in 2013, followed by “China Rich Girlfriend” in 2015 and “Rich People Problems” in 2017. Notably, Kevin Kwan will serve as an executive producer for the show on Warner Bros. Television.

It is unknown if the movie’s original cast will reprise their roles for the TV show.

In the big-screen version of Crazy Rich Asians, Constance Wu plays Rachel Chu, a university professor from New York who accompanies her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding), to Singapore for his friend’s wedding. Upon their arrival, Rachel discovers that Nick belongs to one of Singapore’s most affluent families.

Debuting in August 2018, the romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” proved to be both critically acclaimed and a financial success. It earned an impressive $239 million globally on a production budget of only $30 million. Notably, this movie received two Golden Globe nominations, one being Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.

A sequel to the movie is still in development, with Amy Wang penning the latest draft.
