In the 1980s, Time was often underestimated among the bands. Despite achieving chart success, they didn’t quite achieve the same level of mainstream breakthrough as their musical mentor, Prince. The Time were a dedicated funk and R&B band, providing an excellent platform for Prince to showcase his dance-oriented songs.
Prince likely led the band known as The Time, yet it’s important to acknowledge the impressive array of talent associated with them. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis serve as a prime example. These two musicians joined The Time in 1981, playing keyboards and bass respectively. They contributed significantly to the band’s first two albums, which produced iconic hits such as “Get It Up” and “Wild and Loose.” However, they parted ways with the group in 1983.
Did Prince fire Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis?
The reason is that it wasn’t their decision; a blizzard in Atlanta prevented Jam and Lewis from attending a tour date, causing them to remain grounded. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, they were dismissed by Prince. At that point, they were also producing for other acts such as the S.O.S. Band, but being part of The Time was their major source of income and opportunity.
In the short term, the departure seemed unfavorable. Apollonia co-starred with Prince in the movie “Purple Rain,” and achieved their greatest success yet with the song “Jungle Love” in 1984. However, Time ultimately found triumph, as the band did not release another album until 1990. During this interval, Jam and Lewis rose to prominence, becoming highly sought-after producers in funk and R&B music.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis crafted chart-topping songs for artists such as Janet Jackson, George Michael, and The Human League, making hit singles seem effortless. Even after their dismissal occurred in challenging conditions, they harbored no resentment towards The Time.
Jam and Lewis reunited with the Time in 2020
The pair reconnected with their band for the mentioned albums, “Pandemonium” in 1990 and “Condensate” in 2011. Additionally, they teamed up again with Morris Day, lead singer of Time, to pay tribute to Prince at the 2020 Grammy Awards. During this event, these three musicians collaborated on a medley that combined songs from both Time and Prince.
Tonight, being here feels incredibly emotional for me, not just with our group, but also with The Revolution featuring Sheila E, Lewis shared with Grammy. It’s an incredible sensation to bring us all together in this building, in the same room, on the same stage. Despite taking different paths over time – Jam and Lewis producing separately, while Day continues touring with The Time – everything seems to be working out just fine.
