How To Beat Nerscylla In Monster Hunter Wilds

In the realm of Monster Hunter 4, I encountered a creature known as Nerscylla, a member of the Temnoceran family – essentially a terrifying insect sporting menacing pincers. These creatures are mainly arachnids, and Nerscylla ranks among the most unnerving of them all. Now, with their return in Monster Hunter Wilds, they’re ready to unsettle a whole new wave of gamers like me!

Initially encountered at the Iceshard Cliffs, Nerscylla is adept at using its surroundings to gain an edge and boasts several misdirection moves that can catch you off guard. It also has many status-inflicting abilities. Defeating it may prove difficult, but it’s certainly not out of reach.

Nerscylla – Strengths And Weaknesses

For the first time when you venture into the Iceshard Cliffs, you encounter Nerscylla, a wise-talking Lynian named Rove’s savior. Among the scarce Temoncerans in the game, Nerscylla stands out as an exceptional monster with limited counterparts to measure against. They are swift and can deceive you with their attacks, making it challenging to predict their moves. Moreover, they possess a broad range of status ailments and variable defenses, making it difficult to prepare for all possible scenarios.

They are also rather sizeable, which means it becomes more challenging to aim at the more delicate spots using less powerful weapons. Fortunately, Nerscylla offers numerous vulnerable spots where you can inflict significant harm. Here’s a brief summary of those areas:

1. The eyes: Protected by tough eyelids, but vulnerable when open.
2. The underbelly: Exposed and weak when it crouches or moves quickly.
3. The tail: Can be whipped around rapidly to defend itself, but a well-timed strike can cause significant damage.
4. The legs: While sturdy, they can be targeted for temporary disorientation or immobilization.

  • Weak Point – Retractable Pincers.
  • Elemental/Ailment Weakness – Fire before Mantle is broke, Thunder afterwards. Paralysis
  • Elemental/Ailment Strengths – Water, Dragon, Sleep. Thunder on many parts until Mantle is broken.
  • Best Weapon Damage – Blunt weapons for hard sections, Severing weapons for softer sections, Ranged weapons for the stinger

From this, it’s evident that no single approach will defeat Nerscylla, as their claws are incredibly robust and their shell guards against Thunder attacks. However, their vulnerability to Fire diminishes significantly once it’s eliminated. Moreover, they possess a wide array of status effects, making it challenging to defend against all of them.

From my perspective, not only does their pincer attack pose a significant threat, but it also creates an opportunity for me to inflict massive damage. When they expose this vulnerable area, I seize the moment to aim precise Focus attacks right at it.

Best Equipment To Fight Nerscylla

Nerscylla can be challenging to prepare for due to their many factors that need consideration. Should you opt for the Fire or Thunder elements to tackle them? Or should you aim to target their weaker areas instead, bypassing their tough claws? It’s wise to contemplate a single strategy at a time to optimize your defenses rather than spreading yourself too thin.

With the help of the Comaqchi Accessory, you gain Sleep Resistance, allowing you to withstand Nerscylla’s stinger attack. Simultaneously, the Rompopolo armor set provides Poison Resistance from its pincers. You have the option to combine both sets for a balanced defense or wear the complete Rompopolo set for increased resistance to poison.

In terms of weapons, it’s crucial to consider their sharpness, particularly for those designed for severing. The claws of Nerscylla are extremely durable and require exceptionally high sharpness to inflict damage efficiently. This is worth remembering if your aim is to strike the head for maximum damage. While a Charge Blade can bypass this by enhancing its sword, other severing weapons must maintain their sharpness. If possible, try to obtain at least some “highly-sharpened weapons” as an absolute minimum.

Nerscylla – Fight Breakdown And Moves

Although Nerscylla stands tall, it moves with astonishing agility and swiftly changes its attacks at a moment’s notice, also using webs to rapidly reposition itself. The effects of its various attacks should be your main concern, but staying mobile is crucial to dodge its quick strikes.

Here’s each of their major attacks and how best to counter them:

Move Description Counter
Claw Swipe Nerscylla stands up briefly and quickly slashes ahead of them. This attack isn’t too powerful and can be easily withstood with a shield or hyper armour.
Stinger Stab Nerscylla lifts itself up and stabs directly underneath themselves with their stinger, inflicting sleep. This attack doesn’t deal much damage, but instantly inflicts sleep. If you see them standing up, move out of the way so you’re not underneath.
Web Shot While a distance away from Nerscylla, they will stand up and fire off a volley or webs. This web you if they hit, and remain on the floor for a brief while. The radius of this attack is quite short, so it is easy to avoid. Try to close the distance when they do this move to deal damage while they recover.
Pincer Attack Nerscylla will open up their retractable pincers and start rushing towards you. This attack can be held for quite a while before striking. Inflicts poison. Because Nerscylla can hold the attack for so long, don’t dodge until the last second, or block it if you have a high enough Guard skill. You can use a Focus attack while their pincers are exposed for high damage.
Slam Attack Nerscylla will reel back before dropping their entire body on top of you. This is easily dodged and gives you lots of time to punish Nerscylla.
Web Dash Nerscylla will shoot a web and use it to reposition themselves. You take damage if Nerscylla hits you while moving. This can be used to move further from or closer to the player. If you see them shoot a web, dodge out of the way but try to remain close to them to attack during the cooldown.
Web Swing In areas with a ceiling, Nerscylla can fire a web and swing to reposition, landing with a powerful attack. Like web dash, dodge away from the attack but try to keep yourself close to Nerscylla.
Web Dive While in its nest, Nerscylla can dive beneath the webs and perform a surprise attack on the player. Nerscylla can also get caught in these webs if you stun them while they’re crawling underneath, giving you a great chance to attack them.
Web Grab While in its nest, Nerscylla can dangle from its web and grab anyone that walks underneath them. When you see Nerscylla hanging on a web, use Slinger ammo to shoot them back down.

Unlike other Temnocerans, Nerscylla predominantly relies on its web for moving around and trapping prey. This gives them a greater degree of mobility than their size might suggest, but they tend to remain stationary when not utilizing their webs. Consequently, their stinger and pincers become their most formidable attacks. However, the stinger can be evaded with ease, while effective counterattacks against the pincers can be executed using Focus attacks.

Nersyclla – Drops And Materials

In both Low Rank and High Rank, Nerscylla can be encountered for battle. However, regardless of the rank, the primary drops and target zones remain consistent. Specifically, you should concentrate your attacks on the claw, mantle, and stinger to have a better chance at acquiring rarer items. Yet, keep in mind that many of these parts still hold a relatively high probability of dropping from Wounds or Carvings.

Here is every material you can get from Nerscylla:

  • Low Rank

Material Where It Can Be Acquired
Nerscylla Claw Broken Part (Left Claw), Carving, Target Reward
Rubbery Hide Broken Part (Mantle), Wound Destroyed, Target Reward
Nerscylla Shell Wound Destroyed, Carving, Target Reward
Nerscylla Spike Broken Part (Stinger), Carving, Wound Destroyed, Target Reward
    Nerscylla Chelicera Carving, Target Reward
    Sleep Sac Target Reward
    Nerscylla Certificate Target Reward
  • High Rank

Material Where It Can Be Acquired
Nerscylla Claw+ Broken Part (Left Claw), Carving, Target Reward
Nerscylla Carapace Wound Destroyed, Carving, Target Reward
Rubbery Hide+ Broken Part (Mantle), Wound Destroyed, Target Reward
Nerscylla Spike+ Broken Part (Stinger), Carving, Wound Destroyed, Target Reward
    Nerscylla Shear Carving, Target Reward
    Coma Sac Target Reward
    Nerscylla Certificate S Target Reward

Bizarrely, Nerscylla only drops a claw if you break its Left Claw.

In its High Rank version, Nerscylla doesn’t acquire any fresh materials; instead, it enhances existing ones. Consequently, the drop rates for these materials remain constant and can still be obtained from their original sources. Luckily, dismantling its components isn’t overly challenging, so you can collect its materials swiftly.
