Bill Murray recently shared heartfelt thoughts on the passing of Gene Hackman, commemorating the talented actor and reminiscing about their time together during filming for Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums.
What did Bill Murray say about Gene Hackman?
In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Murray commended Hackman, but also mentioned that he could be quite tough on Wes Anderson during the production of “The Royal Tenenbaums” in 2001, where both actors worked together.
Gene Hackman was quite formidable, according to Murray. However, he was incredibly skilled. He was indeed challenging, a fact we can acknowledge now, as he was a tough character. Veteran actors are often unyielding towards young directors, and they can be brutally harsh. Gene was particularly rough on Wes, and I often had to intervene to protect my friend.
In the movie, Hackman portrayed Royal O’Reilly, the family head. Notably, during its production, Anderson was a budding 32-year-old director in the vibrant Hollywood scene. Later on, Murray reminisced about an instance where Hackman would express irritation when another actor botched a scene.
Gene would’ve nailed it, but the other actor might mess up, and I’d exclaim something like ‘Oh, dear.’ While I was observing, I found myself thinking, ‘That’s why he wants to lose his temper so easily.’ However, Gene delivered a standard performance, and the other actor did well. At that moment, it seemed like Gene was about to push the actor off the building.
I can understand Gene’s frustration since he viewed Wes Anderson as a brash young filmmaker, while Gene himself has created some of the finest American movies. As a result, he was rather tense. Working with children, dogs, and Kumar [Pallana], who was something of an enigma to everyone, only added to his discomfort since they often placed him in difficult situations. He felt a great sense of responsibility and kept wondering, ‘What on earth am I doing here among these people?’ Yet, his performance is exceptional. Watching him made me empathize with him as I saw the hardships he was enduring.
95-year-old Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, aged similarly, were discovered deceased in their residence on a Wednesday. The police investigating the incident have labeled it as “suspicious.
