Official trailer and plot of Thandel
In the town of Thandel, it’s Naga Chaitanya’s character, Raju, who finds himself smitten with Bujji, played by Sai Pallavi. Prior to their marriage, Bujji expresses her fears about the perils of fishing and urges him to abandon the practice. Disregarding her apprehensions, Raju sets sail on a journey. A fierce storm causes his boat to deviate from its course and ultimately results in his capture by Pakistani authorities. The movie chronicles Raju’s fight for survival and his determined efforts to make it back home.
Drawing from real-life occurrences, Thandel’s narrative recounts the harrowing experience of Srikakulam fishermen who accidentally ventured into Pakistan’s territorial waters. In the year 2000, a 21-year-old named Chodipilli Musalayya relocated to Gujarat for employment opportunities. At that time, fishermen didn’t have GPS and frequently drifted across borders unintentionally. One fateful night, their boats were encircled by the Pakistani Coast Guard who then detained them.
After spending a year filled with doubt, the authorities eventually freed them in February 2002. With their harrowing ordeal etched into their memories, Musalayya and his fishing companions made their way back home.
