The PP-1 Is an Ultra-Minimalist Turntable Crafted From Solid Aluminum

The Paris-based design company, Waiting For Ideas, has revealed its inaugural vinyl record player, embodying the progressive style and contemporary materials characteristic of their furniture, items, and environments.

Established in 2021, Waiting For Ideas – a brainchild of designer Jean-Baptiste Anotin – operates at the crossroads of art and design. Its primary focus is on producing visually captivating and intellectually stimulating works, including installations. For its debut project, the studio aimed to deliver a serene listening experience by simplifying the design, employing an imposing structure made from a single piece of aluminum.

Streamlining the device’s operations, Waiting For Ideas crafted this item devoid of a control panel or turntable arm, relying instead on sophisticated technology to instantly recognize the record speed upon insertion. All you have to do is flip the vinyl over, connect it, and press play to enjoy your music. To create a full-fledged listening setup, they’ve designed a customized speaker system that offers versatile configuration options, allowing users to stack the player on top or arrange them side by side, reminiscent of a traditional setup.

Recently, I’ve noticed a surge in innovative turntables and speakers hitting the market, with designers using these practical gadgets as art canvases to experiment with fresh forms and materials. Collaborations like HELIOT EMIL x Nocs Design’s MONOLITH speaker and Teenage Engineering x John Lennon’s OB-4 Interactive Speaker share distinctive features such as chrome finishes and monolithic designs. Meanwhile, the rising NY-based brand Silence Please is crafting modern Hi-Fi speakers that resemble gramophone monitors. As a gamer, I can’t wait to see what other creative combinations will emerge in this exciting space!

Custom orders for Waiting For Ideas’ PP-1 turntable are available now via the brand’s web store.
