Instagram users were taken aback when their Reels feeds unexpectedly showed graphic and sensitive content. Users expressed their concerns on social media about their feeds being flooded with violent and explicit material. Many wondered if the platform had been compromised as disturbing videos surfaced, even for those who typically see less explicit content due to their filters. As the uproar online escalated, Meta acknowledged the issue.
In this article, we will delve into the details of the issue and statement by the company.
Did Instagram get hacked?
Instagram users found themselves taken aback and alarmed when they observed a sudden spike of violent and explicit content in their Reels section. Some users voiced their concerns on social media, questioning whether Instagram had been compromised, as unsettling videos, encompassing everything from graphic violence to adult themes, persisted even after activating content filters.
Meta has apologized for a technical glitch which led Instagram to suggest violent and explicit content on users’ Reels feeds. On Thursday, they admitted the problem and confirmed it had been rectified. A representative from Meta, speaking with CNBC, stated, “We have corrected an issue that caused certain users to view content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been suggested. We regret our mistake.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed a concerning trend where some Instagram videos I’ve come across have been quite disturbing, even with the highest sensitive content settings activated. I’ve seen everything from violent attacks to explicit material and other graphic content that didn’t align with my usual browsing preferences. Strangely, marking such posts as “Not Interested” didn’t seem to stop similar content from popping up in my feed.
Instagram usually deletes extremely graphic content like dismemberment or explicit material, while labeling sensitive posts with warnings. Their moderation system uses internal technology and a team of reviewers to screen out harmful content. However, due to a recent technical issue, some disturbing videos managed to bypass the filters.
The incident follows recent changes in Meta’s content moderation strategy. In January, the company announced it would focus on “high-severity violations” such as terrorism and child exploitation. Meanwhile, the company will ease restrictions on less serious content. It also began phasing out some automated content demotions.
