Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern, expressed in a recent episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that Bill Clinton, in retrospect, should have stepped down from his position as President following the public revelation of their affair. She additionally pondered over the intense media attention she experienced and its repercussions on young women.
Here’s what we know about her latest remarks.
What did Monica Lewinsky say about Bill Clinton?
In a conversation on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Monica Lewinsky expressed her belief that a suitable reaction from former President Bill Clinton, following the public disclosure of their affair, would have been for him to step down from office.
As a fan, I believe that if I were in Hillary Clinton’s shoes, I would have handled that situation differently. Instead of addressing it publicly, I would have kept quiet and let it be nobody’s business. In hindsight, I think she could have resigned instead of staying on and potentially damaging her reputation or putting an innocent person in a difficult position. It was unfortunate to see a respected figure like Clinton throw a young person starting out in the world under the bus, which is something I would never do as a fan of fairness and integrity. During his tenure, Clinton admitted to an affair with Lewinsky, which eventually led to his impeachment in 1998. Following the incident, Lewinsky shared her experiences of how she was depicted by the White House and media, stating, “I was swiftly portrayed as an obsessive, a seductress, mentally unbalanced, and a ditzy blonde.” She also recounted Clinton’s public denial: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.” Reflecting on these events, she described it as gaslighting and emotionally devastating.
Lewinsky emphasized that the manner in which she was treated established a precedent that had far-reaching consequences for women who followed her. “It was heartbreaking to see a young woman like myself being publicly ridiculed on an international stage,” she stated. In the past, she has discussed the unequal power dynamic in their relationship, expressing to CNN in 2021, “It was completely inappropriate for the most powerful man, my superior, who was 49 years old, to engage with a 22-year-old woman, fresh out of college.
In various interviews and publications, Clinton has expressed his feelings about the scandal, stating in his book “Citizens” that he hopes only the best for the person involved (presumably referring to Monica Lewinsky). As per The Guardian, this individual, who is now an advocate against bullying, has recently debuted a podcast titled “Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky.
