Following numerous years of fan uproar and decreasing ticket sales, it appears change is in the air at Lucasfilm. According to recent reports, Kathleen Kennedy, who has been a contentious president managing the Star Wars series since Disney’s takeover in 2012, is expected to resign by the end of 2025. This news brings a sense of relief for ardent Star Wars supporters, as her leadership has been marred with mistakes that have weakened the once powerful franchise.
Under Kennedy’s guidance, we’ve observed once cherished characters becoming mere echoes of what they used to be. Luke Skywalker, the symbol of hope from the initial trilogy, was turned into a cranky recluse on Ahch-To, sipping green milk from an extraterrestrial source and carelessly flinging his lightsaber across his back. The subsequent trilogy, in spite of its initial financial triumph, fell short of recapturing the charm of its forerunners, with a fragmented plot that left numerous viewers puzzled.
The list of questionable choices continues: From treating Indiana Jones unfairly in his later years, to space witches who are lesbians using the Force, we’ve witnessed exciting projects announced with much anticipation, only to be criticized as being focused on identity politics when they were finally released. The frequent changes of directors and release dates became a recurring joke in the film industry. Even attempts to explore new territories, such as the canceled Willow series, were quickly removed from Disney+. I could talk at length about her failure to support Gina Carano.
It seems Kennedy’s disregard for the fundamental Star Wars fan community might be his biggest issue. Instead of addressing valid concerns, there was a pattern of labeling critics as “toxic,” “racist,” or “problematic.” This strategy unfortunately deepened the divide between Lucasfilm and its most loyal followers.
Moving forward, there’s a glimmer of excitement among Star Wars enthusiasts regarding the future. The anticipated seasons 2 of Andor and the film featuring The Mandalorian & Grogu may give us hints about what’s to come, but it might be a stretch. The identity of the new leader could potentially bring back the grand storytelling and cherished characters that initially won our hearts in a galaxy far, far away. However, keep in mind that we’re discussing Disney here, so manage your expectations accordingly.
However, with Kennedy stepping off the stage, there’s a sense of relief among his fans. May the Force that has been dormant for so long now rise again. Ichi Bacca would certainly approve.
