Unni Mukundan is currently one of the most discussed Malayalam actors, largely because of the success of his movie Marco. Recently, as a producer and actor, he held a press conference to publicize his upcoming film Get Set Baby. During this event, he also spoke about the recent demand for an industry-wide halt by the Kerala Film Producers’ Association.
Speaking to reporters, actor Unni Mukundan expressed his viewpoint that actors should have the freedom to produce movies using their own funds, following their personal preferences. He further stated that the choice to create a film is a private matter and not open to scrutiny by others. In his role as a producer, Unni Mukundan emphasized his ambition to generate quality films and asserted his right to make movies he chooses with the resources he has accumulated.
The actor emphasized that it’s nobody else’s business how he uses his personal funds, suggesting instead that it’s courteous for people to keep their opinions and interference to themselves in such matters. Moreover, he made clear that he has no duty to share details of the earnings or losses associated with those funds with anyone else.
Mukundan disagreed with the idea that an actor’s role is limited to acting alone. He argued that such a statement isn’t accurate, as there’s no rule anywhere stating that only specific individuals can create films. Using the example of individuals who left IT to pursue filmmaking, he further noted that he doesn’t demand high compensation and works within his own production company instead.
Amidst a prolonged dispute within the Malayalam film industry, the Marco actor has recently voiced his opinions. This comes at a time when the Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA) declared an industry-wide halt effective July 1st. The strike is in response to the excessive fees demanded by actors and also to advocate for the abolition of entertainment tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST) within the film industry.
Various well-known figures, such as producer Antony Perumbavoor, have voiced their opposition to the decision for a halt. On Monday, February 24th, even the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) held a meeting to address this issue. They disclosed that a shutdown is not an effective solution and are open to negotiations about compensation.
Moving onto the professional scene, Unni Mukundan’s new movie titled “Get Set Baby” was released on February 21st. The cast includes Nikhila Vimal, Chemban Vinod Jose, Shyam Mohan, Surabhi Lakshmi, and others in significant roles. This film has been penned by YV Rajesh and Anoop Ravindran, with Vinay Govind directing it.
Sajiv Soman, Prakshali Jain, and Suunil Jain financed the project through Skanda Cinemas and Kingsmen Productions, while Alex J. Pulickal handled the cinematography for the movie. Sam CS worked on the film’s score, and Arju Benn oversaw its editing. Upon release, the film received favorable reviews from audiences.
