Architects J. Mayer H. have thoughtfully redesigned a war-ravaged carriage house, turning it into a contemporary city haven that preserves its valuable architectural legacy.

Built during the 1960s to 1980s on top of a bomb-destroyed carriage house’s remains, this dwelling was carefully assembled from salvaged materials. Situated in Berlin, this organic rebuild features a complex structure characterized by various levels and unique room configurations, giving it a distinct personality. The recent refurbishment acknowledges its historical development, preserving the original design while infusing a modern, harmonious aesthetic.

The renovation subtly enhances the current exterior and garden, keeping their original charm intact while incorporating contemporary sculptural features and native plants. Inside, the design emphasizes material consistency. Original handrails, wooden doors, antique floor tiles, and mid-century light switches have been carefully restored and seamlessly combined within a modern monochrome color scheme. This method combines old and new aesthetics, marrying historical textures with sleek minimalism.

One key aspect of this project is the smooth integration of indoor and outdoor areas. The lush garden, inhabited by foxes, birds, and small animals, blends effortlessly with the living space, forming a natural expansion of the home. Indoors, the interplay of sunlight, rich wooden accents, and carefully selected furniture generates a vibrant yet tranquil ambiance, adding depth to the residence’s cultural and historical character.

In our home, the carefully picked furniture pieces play a pivotal part in striking a pleasing balance between its historical charm and modern allure. Striking items were thoughtfully selected for various parts of the house, skillfully merging sleek designs with practical sophistication. For instance, the living room showcases a soothing sofa designed by Ubald Klug that serves as the main attraction. Its wavy form mirrors the house’s architectural layers, infusing the room with a sense of flow and motion. Furthermore, its neutral color complements our monochrome design, letting textures and light play the leading roles.

Up on the balcony, the sculptural yet inviting Roly Poly Chairs by Driade, with their unique bowl-shaped seats and cylindrical legs, create an intriguing blend of furniture and art. These playful yet earthy designs harmoniously fit into the lush garden, emphasizing the harmonious union between the dwelling’s constructed space and its verdant surroundings.
