Discussions in the film industry are buzzing around Captain America 4 and The Monkey, as they’ve both hit the big screen. The earnings and audience responses to these movies have garnered significant attention. Although Brave New World started off well, its decline in week two has sparked discussions similar to those seen with previous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) titles. Conversely, The Monkey has made a strong entrance, setting the best horror opening of 2023 and further reinforcing Neon’s impressive track record.
Captain America: Brave New World’s box office continues to stay on top
In its second weekend, Disney and Marvel Studios’ film Captain America: New World Order saw a significant drop in earnings, bringing in about $28.2 million. Despite this decrease, Captain America 4 continued to lead the box office charts, surpassing all other films. To date, the movie has amassed $141.2 million within the U.S. and $148.2 million internationally, totaling $289.4 million globally. With a production budget of $180 million, the estimated break-even point is roughly $425 million.
In its second weekend, Captain America: Brave New World saw a substantial 68% decrease in earnings, totaling $28.2 million. This dip was less steep than that of The Marvels (-78%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (-70%), but much more pronounced compared to Deadpool & Wolverine (-54%) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (-48%). Despite receiving a B grade from CinemaScore and mixed audience feedback, it was not anticipated that Brave New World would continue at a robust pace. IMAX added $2.3 million to the weekend earnings, boosting large-format revenues to a total of $13.2 million. The movie earned $7.2 million on its second Friday (a decrease of 82% compared to the previous Friday), and brought in an additional $12.8 million on Saturday, before earning $8.2 million on Sunday.
The Monkey opens second at this week’s box office
In a notable turn of events, Neon’s chilling production titled “The Monkey” launched to an impressive $14.2 million, coming in second only to Longlegs ($22.4 million) in terms of opening earnings for the distributor this year. Despite earning a C+ CinemaScore, it has managed to secure the strongest horror debut of 2025 thus far. Interestingly, the majority of its audience (35%) falls within the age group of 25-34, and an impressive 58% of ticket purchases were made by men.
As a gamer, I’m proud to say that we kept our TV ad budget relatively low, under $300,000, and instead focused on digital marketing strategies. The trailer for our game skyrocketed to 100 million views within just 72 hours! To generate buzz, we organized screenings, collaborated with influencers to create exclusive figurines, and even set up an eye-catching 8-foot monkey display at gaming events.
When the game finally launched, PLF screens made up a significant portion of our box office sales – about 12%. The performance was particularly strong in major cities, showing that our marketing efforts really paid off!
The Monkey and Captain America: Brave New World are currently playing in theaters.
