Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and a billionaire, recently took to social media to solicit opinions from users about who they believe should play the next James Bond character, following Amazon’s MGM studio acquiring full control over the franchise. In a deal signed this past week, Amazon gained complete creative ownership of the James Bond franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, who have been responsible for managing the intellectual property inherited from their father Albert “Cubby” Broccoli. However, they are now relinquishing their role in overseeing the IP’s creative direction.
After making a post to his 4.3 million Instagram followers, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos inquired about who should be the next James Bond. This sparked a wave of endorsements for Henry Cavill, known for his role as Superman in Man of Steel, who had earlier been speculated as a potential candidate along with Aaron Taylor Johnson.

It’s possible that Bezos intentionally used an image of Daniel Craig in a pink velvet jacket for a specific reason. Confidential sources within Amazon MGM’s upper management have suggested that they hold a unique perspective on James Bond, departing significantly from the traditional straight, white, male portrayal found in the novels and films. One high-ranking executive has gone so far as to state that they do not view the character as heroic.
As a devoted fan, it’s truly concerning to hear about the potential missteps for my cherished spy series, given the recent news suggesting Amazon executives may not fully grasp or appreciate the iconic nature of the 007 character. Rumors suggest some executives even question his heroism, which is deeply troubling as Bond has stood as a defining cinematic hero throughout history. This seems to indicate a significant disconnect between the new guard and the character’s established identity – a disconnection that runs counter to Bond’s enduring legacy.
Last year, the production of the James Bond franchise was temporarily paused due to a creative disagreement between Amazon and Barbara Broccoli. Amazon suggested expanding the brand with Marvel-style spinoffs, an idea that Broccoli found implausible, reportedly referring to studio executives as “foolish.” She also raised concerns about Amazon’s suitability for continuing the franchise, stating that they had been holding it “ransom.
In a statement to media outlets, the leader of Amazon’s Prime Video and MGM Studios, Mike Hopkins, referred to the James Bond series as a “valued legacy” that will be passed down to future generations.
Hopkins expressed gratitude towards Albert R. Broccoli (deceased) and Harry Saltzman, who initially brought James Bond to cinemas globally, as well as Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their relentless commitment and significant contributions in preserving the beloved franchise’s legacy, which is admired by fans worldwide.
As a devoted cinematic enthusiast, I’m thrilled to carry on this cherished legacy and eagerly anticipate unveiling the upcoming chapter of the iconic 0 James Bond series for movie-goers worldwide.
Never say ‘never’ I suppose.
